Mountaineers Stumble Against Wildcats

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team (10-8, 0-6 Big 12) suffered a setback against the Wildcats on Friday evening, as the Mountaineers were defeated by Kansas State, 7-0, at the Mike Goss Tennis Stadium in Manhattan, Kansas.
"It was a tough day today, and I am glad there is not a single person on our team, player or coach, that is happy with how we performed today," said coach Miha Lisac. "We have an opportunity to regroup going into Sunday against Kansas."
Doubles Recap
The first doubles match to finish came from the No. 1 slot, where junior Sofia Duran and freshman Anastasiia Bovolskaia were defeated by Anna Turco and Margot Decker, 0-6.
In the No. 2 slot, senior Paula Goetz and freshman Nicole Roc were bested by Karine-Marion Job and Ines Mesquita, 1-6, as Kansas State clinched the doubles team point and led, 1-0.
The final doubles match from the No. 3 slot went unfinished. Sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau and senior Abigail Rosiello led Ioana Gheorghita and Maria Linares, 4-2, when the match was called.
Singles Recap
Starting in the No. 4 slot, Courteau stumbled in the first match of singles, falling to Karine-Marion Job in two sets, 2-6, 1-6.
Duran started in the No. 2 slot and was second to finish. The junior was defeated by Anna Turco, 2-6, 2-6.
In the No. 3 slot, Bovolskaia went toe-to-toe with Margot Decker. Decker proved to be too much for the freshman, defeating her in two sets, 2-6, 2-6. With the win, K-State claimed its fourth team point to clinch the match. The remaining matches were played out.
Junior Christina Jordan started in the No. 1 slot against Maria Linares. The Detroit, Michigan, native suffered a setback against Linares, losing in two sets, 2-6, 3-6.
Starting in the No. 6 slot was sophomore Giovanna Caputo. After dropping a hard-fought, first set, Caputo fell to Ioana Gheorghita, 4-6, 2-6.
In the final match of the day from the No. 5 slot, Roc was bested in the first set, 2-6, by Ines Mesquita but bounced back to win the second set, 6-4, and forced a third-set, super tiebreaker. In the final frame, Roc kept it close but stumbled to Gheorghita, 7-10.

Looking Ahead
West Virginia next competes on Sunday, April 7, as it travels to Lawrence, Kansas, for a matchup with Kansas.
Sunday's matchup against Kansas is set to begin at 12 p.m. from the Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence. Fans can follow action the against the Jayhawks via StatBroadcast and can watch the match via KU's live stream.
The Mountaineers are seeking their first win over Kansas. Last season, WVU was defeated by No. 16 KU, 4-0, in Morgantown.
The Jayhawks enter Sunday's contest with a 13-4 record, including a 4-2 record in conference play, and is scheduled to take on Iowa State on Friday. In the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)/Oracle team rankings, the Jayhawks checked in at No. 14.
