WVU Falls to No. 14 Jayhawks

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team (10-9, 0-7 Big 12) finished its final road trip of the season on Sunday afternoon. The Mountaineers fell to the Kansas Jayhawks, 6-1, at the Jayhawks Tennis Center in Lawrence, Kansas.
"The credit goes to Kansas today," said coach Miha Lisac. "They executed more of the right things in the matches than we did today."
Doubles Recap
The first doubles match to finish came from the No. 1 slot, where junior Sofia Duran and freshman Anastasiia Bovolskaia took on the No. 1-ranked pair of Janet Koch and Nina Khmelnitckaia. The nationally-ranked duo bested Duran and Bovolskaia, 6-0.
In the No. 2 slot, senior Paula Goetz and freshman Nicole Roc stumbled against No. 60 Anastasia Rychagova and Sonia Smagina, 2-6. With the win, the Jayhawks clinched the doubles team point and led WVU, 1-0.
The final doubles match from the No. 3 slot went unfinished. Sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau and senior Abigail Rosiello led Maria Toran Ribes and Malkia Ngounoue, 5-2, when the match was called.
Singles Recap
Starting in the No. 2 slot and the first to finish, Duran fell to Plobrung Plipuech in two sets, 1-6, 3-6, to open singles play.
Junior Christina Jordan started in the No. 1 slot against No. 113 Janet Koch. Jordan dropped her singles match to Koch, 3-6, 2-6.
In the No. 6 slot, sophomore Giovanna Caputo went toe-to-toe against Malkia Ngounoue. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, native was defeated by Ngounoue in two sets, 3-6, 3-6. With the win, Kanas bagged its fourth team point and clinched the match. The final three matches were played out.
Starting in the No. 4 slot, Bovolskaia dropped the first set to Nina Khmelnitckaia, 2-6, but rebounded to claim the second set, 6-3. Despite a hard-fought third set, Bovolskaia stumbled in the final frame, 9-11, to lose the match.
Goetz squared off with Sonia Smagina in the No. 3 slot. The senior suffered a setback against Smagina, falling in two sets, 3-6, 6-7.
In the final singles match from the No. 5 slot, Roc fell in the first set to Maria Toran Ribes, 6-7, following a tiebreaker. The freshman bounced back in the second set, winning 7-6, in a tiebreaker. In the final frame, Roc toppled Ribes, 10-4, to claim the Mountaineers' lone win of the day.

Looking Ahead
The Mountaineers return to Morgantown for their final two matches of the regular season. WVU is set to host Baylor on Friday, April 12, and Texas on Sunday, April 14.
Friday's contest against the Lady Bears is set to begin at 5 p.m. ET, while Sunday's contest against the Longhorns is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
Sunday's match is Senior Day and will mark the last home match for Goetz, Rosiello and fellow senior Kirsten White.
