Sear Leads WVU at The Greenbrier

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. – Senior Max Sear birdied six holes across two rounds to lead West Virginia on the first day of action at the 2019 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship, hosted by the Mountaineers on Saturday on The Old White TPC at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
The Mountaineers currently sit in ninth place overall, shooting 293-282=575. After shooting 13 over in the first round, WVU shaved 11 strokes off their first-round score to card two-over par in the second to finish the day 15-over par.
Defending National Champion Oklahoma State is atop the team leaderboard at 14-under par, while TCU is in second place at six under. OSU's Viktor Hovland and TCU's Hayden Springer are tied for the individual lead at eight-under par with matching scores of 132.
Sear paired four bogeys with three bogeys and a pair of double-bogeys to shoot three-over-par with a 73 in the first round. He added two more birdies in the second, along with a pair of bogeys, to finish even-par with a score of 70. Sear finished with a two-round score of 143 for three-over-par and is tied for 25th place.
Sophomores Logan Perkins and Matthew Sharpstene, along with junior Etienne Papineau, are tied for 28th place at four-over par with 144. Perkins struggled in the first round, shooting four-over despite a pair of birdies. He went on to balance four bogeys and four birdies to finish the second round even-par.
Sharpstene shot three-over par with a 73 in the first round before using a trio of birdies to finish one-over par in the second. Papineau also carded a 73 in the first round, then used a pair of birdies to shoot one-over par with a 71 in the second.
Junior Philipp Matlari shot 78-75=153 to finish 13-over-par. He is in 49th place with one round remaining.
The Mountaineers are paired with Kansas for the third and final round. The two will tee off starting at 9:07 a.m. off hole No. 10.
