MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four members of the West Virginia University tennis team earned awards at the team's annual banquet on Wednesday, April 24, at Touchdown Terrace at Milan Puskar Stadium.
Following a 37-win season, sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau received the team's Most Valuable Player award. Courteau led the team with 19 singles wins, gathering 12 wins during the spring season, and tied for the team lead with 18 doubles wins. Pairing with senior Abigail Rosiello for the majority of the spring season, the two each posted a 10-5 doubles record this year.
Rosiello was selected as this year's Most Improved Player after her impressive 27-win season. Prior to her senior season, the Morgantown native had gathered only 12 wins in during her career. More than doubling her previous total, Rosiello tied Courteau for the team lead with 18 doubles wins and also posted a 4-0 record in singles during the spring.
It was a tight race for this year's Rookie of the Year between freshmen Anastasiia Bovolskaia and Nicole Roc, but after 14-win spring season, Roc was named this year's recipient. Despite sitting out the entire fall season, the Chicago, Illinois, native posted a 10-5 singles record in the spring, including a 5-1 record from the No. 3 singles slot. Roc also led the team with three Big 12 singles wins this season.
The final award of the night was the Cynthia (Worrall) Timmons and Karin Raudsep Memorial Courage Award. In its inaugural year, the Courage Award honors the memory of two former Mountaineer tennis players, who passed away after their battles with cancer. This award is given to a member of the tennis team who overcame adversity that took them off the court until they were able to overcome it and return to action.
Teammates from 1981-84, Raudsep and Timmons both helped the West Virginia tennis program soar to great heights under head coach Martha Thorn. A tenacious player on the court, Raudsep finished her career with 81 career wins and posted two 20-win seasons during her time at WVU. A four-year letterman at West Virginia, Timmons possessed a passion and love for the game that inspired and drove her teammates to success. A two-time Jane Little Memorial Award Recipient, Timmons compiled a winning record during her career.
This year's recipient of the Timmons and Raudsep Memorial Courage Award went to senior Kirsten White. Despite being sidelined due to injury for the majority of the 2018-19 season, White bagged nine wins in her final year at WVU. Like Rosiello, the Charleston, West Virginia, native doubled, and almost tripled, her career win total this season. In the fall, she posted a 6-4 singles record and bagged one doubles win.
The Mountaineers finished their season last week at the Big 12 Championship in Lawrence, Kansas.
