MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team (10-11, 0-9 Big 12) gave the No. 6 Texas Longhorns a good fight but could not complete the upset, as the Mountaineers fell to UT, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown.

"We battled, we fought well. There's a reason why Texas is one of the best teams in the country," said coach Miha Lisac. "They have some of the better competitors in the country as well. They showed that today. Regardless of how much we were fighting, pressing and battling in certain spots, they were able to match that. So, the credit goes to them."

Doubles Recap
The first doubles match to finish came from the No. 2 slot, where junior Sofia Duran and freshman Anastasiia Bovolskaia battled but fell to Petra Granic and Tijana Spasojevic, 4-6.

In the No. 1 slot, senior Paula Goetz and junior Christina Jordan paired up to take on No. 55 Bianca and Anna Turati. The Mountaineer duo was bested by the Turati twins, 2-6, as Texas claimed the doubles team point.

The final match from the No. 3 slot went unfinished. Senior Abigail Rosiello and sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau trailed Fernanda Labrana and Bojana Markovic, 5-4, when the match was called.

Singles Recap
Starting in the No. 1 slot, Jordan suffered a setback against No. 29 Bianca Turati, falling in two sets, 0-6, 0-6, to open singles.

Finishing shortly after from the No. 2 slot, Duran fell to No. 41 Anna Turati in two sets, 1-6, 2-6.

In the No. 4 slot, Bovolskaia won her first set, 6-3, against No. 123 Bojana Markovic. The freshman fell in the second set, 1-6, as Markovic would force a third-set tiebreaker. Bovolskaia won the final frame easily, winning 6-0, to complete the upset and claim WVU's lone win of the day.

In the No. 3 slot, Goetz bested No. 55 Petra Granic, 6-4, in the first set but dropped her second set, 5-7. In the third-set tiebreaker, Goetz battled but could not complete West Virginia's second upset, as she fell to Granic, 2-6, in the final frame. With the win, the Longhorns claimed their fourth team point and clinched the match. The final two matches were played out.

Starting in the No. 5 slot, Courteau suffered a setback to Fernanda Labrana, falling in two sets, 2-6, 4-6.

In the final match of the day from the No. 6 slot, sophomore Giovanna Caputo fell to Katie Poluta, 2-6, 0-6.

Sunday's contest was Senior Day and marked the final home match for a trio of seniors – Goetz, Rosiello and Kirsten White.

"I think they all contributed a tremendous amount to the program," said Lisac. "Paula and Abby had great fights out on the court today, so it was a very good way for them to finish."

Looking Ahead
West Virginia travels to Lawrence, Kansas, on Thursday, April 18, to compete at the Big 12 Tournament. Thursday's matchup and first serve will be announced this week.

This year's tournament will be hosted by the Kansas Jayhawks at the Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence, from April 18-21.
