West Virginia Drops Tough Match Against Oklahoma
March 22, 2019 10:58 PM | Tennis
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 22, 2019) – The West Virginia University tennis team (8-6, 0-4 Big 12) fought hard but could not secure the win, as it was defeated by No. 30-ranked Oklahoma, 5-2, on Friday evening at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown.
"First, I thought Oklahoma played well, especially in important situations, and the credit goes to them as well. But on our end, our fight was good. Our battle was good," said coach Miha Lisac. "I was pleased with how we competed today. We lacked a little bit of concentration and execution in important situations. We'll go back and continue to bring the fight the way we did today. But we need to make sure that we're sharper the next time around."
Doubles Recap
The first doubles match to finish came from the No. 1 slot, where senior Paula Goetz and junior Christina Jordan paired up for the first time this season to take on Jasmine Asghar and Ivana Corley. After being down 4-1, Goetz and Jordan battled back to cut Asghar and Corley's lead to one. Their comeback would fall short, as the pair from Oklahoma won the next two points to claim the match, 6-3.
In the No. 3, senior Abigail Rosiello and sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau battled back-and-forth with Skyler Miller and Camila Romero. Oklahoma clinched the doubles team point after Miller and Romero defeated the Mountaineer duo, 6-4.
The final doubles match from the No. 2 slot went unfinished. Freshman Anastasiia Bovolskaia and junior Sofia Duran were tied, 5-5, with Kianah Motosono and Oleksandra Korashvili when the match was called.
Singles Recap

Making her seventh start of the season in the No. 1 slot, Jordan stumbled early against No. 19-ranked Oleksandra Korashvili in the first set, as the Korashvili jumped out to a 3-1 lead. Jordan went on to drop the first set, 4-6. An early, second-set lead helped Korashvili claim the second frame, 6-2, to win the match.
Goetz squared off with Jasmine Asghar in the No. 2 slot, but the junior from Oklahoma proved to be too much for Goetz, as she claimed the match, 6-2, 6-4, and clinched the match for the Sooners. The remaining matches were played out.
