March 20, 2019 04:32 PM | Track & Field
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson of the West Virginia University track and field team has been named the Big 12 Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Jackson won the women's 1,500 meters at the 49er Classic, on March 15, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Lusby, Maryland, native earned a time of 4:23.15 in the win, which ranks No. 1 in the nation following the opening weekend of the 2019 outdoor season.
Jackson came-from-behind and used a strong final kick on the last lap to earn the victory against a field of 112 other runners. The Mountaineers combined for eight top-10 finishes, including two victories, at the two-day meet.
The weekly honor is the first of Jackson's career and WVU's second of the track and field season. Redshirt senior Madelin Gardner also earned the accolade on Feb. 20.
This week, the Mountaineers host the West Virginia Open, on Saturday, March 23, at The Track and Field Complex at Mylan Park, in Morgantown. The meet marks WVU's first home outdoor meet since 2009. Saturday also marks the first competitive meet at the new facility, which officially opened in October.
The action is set to begin at 11 a.m., with running events scheduled to commence at 2 p.m.
