
Jackson’s Win Opens 49er Classic

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Led by redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson, the West Virginia University track and field team opened competition at the 49er Classic, in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Friday.
Jackson won the women's 1,500 meters in a time of 4:23.15, one of five top-10 finishes for the Mountaineers at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center on the day. In all, WVU competed in nine events on the opening day of the two-day, outdoor season-opening meet.
In the women's pole vault (unseeded), freshman Julia Brundin earned a second-place finish with a mark of 3.20 meters (10 feet, 6 inches), while sophomore Mikayla Shute jumped 3.25 meters (10 feet, 8 inches) to tie for ninth place in the women's pole vault invite.
On the track, redshirt senior Bria Welker placed fourth in the women's 400 meters. The Ridgeley, West Virginia, native crossed the finish line in 56.50. In the women's 5,000 meters invite, redshirt sophomore Antigone Archer finished 10th in 17:44.70.
Redshirt sophomore Sarah Wills joined Jackson in the women's 1,500 meters, earning an 11th-place finish in 4:38.91. WVU also earned a pair of 12th-place finishes, as freshman Margaret Rymer tallied a 1:05.71 in the women's 400-meter hurdles, while freshman Peter-Gay McKenzie logged a mark of 5.25 meters (17 feet, 2.75 inches) in the women's long jump.
Sophomore Michaela Ashford also competed in the long jump event, finishing in 40th place with a mark of 4.78 meters (15 feet, 8.25 inches). Earlier in the day, Ashford placed 52nd overall in the women's 100 meters with a time of 12.99. Redshirt senior Shamoya McNeil also competed, finishing 55th in 13.11.
Additionally, freshman Linda Jebet competed in the women's 400 meters with Welker. She placed 62nd with a time of 1:02.90.
The Mountaineers, who are opening their outdoor season in Charlotte for the third consecutive season, are one of more than 50 schools participating at the 49er Classic this weekend. West Virginia is joined by Appalachian State, Charlotte, Cleveland State, Davidson, East Carolina, Elon, Temple, Wake Forest and others.
