Life as a Mountaineer - Jaquie Tun
March 17, 2019 09:00 AM | Gymnastics
Senior gymnast Jaquie Tun is making the most of her fabulous West Virginia University education.
The Academic All-Big 12 performer is parlaying her love of art as a child into a graphic design degree at WVU. Of equal importance, she is now using her expertise to benefit other Mountaineer athletes as a graphic design intern in the Athletics Communications Office.
"When I was little I loved drawing," the Chattanooga, Tennessee, resident explained. "I knew being an artist was my natural thing. I heard about graphic design and my teacher in high school actually helped me look into what graphic design was. Graphic design could really put all of my artistic skills together to get a potential job in the future with that."
At WVU, Tun discovered a place where she could perform for a top-level gymnastics program and also earn a degree in a top-level graphic design program.
"I'm really loving it," she said. "I've played around with typography. I've played around with graphics in Photoshop and it was a lot of fun and so I was like, 'I can do this.'
"Gymnastics has sort of helped push me through those hard times," she added.
"To be able to come to a major institution like WVU and compete for four years, battle back from injury, get an internship and get her degree, I'm proud with what she has been able to do," WVU gymnastics coach Jason Butts said.
Tun learned about the Athletics Communications graphic design internship through her roommate Carly Ledbetter, a senior on the WVU rowing team who is also a graphic design intern.
The two can often be seen sitting next to each other in front of their desktop computers designing social media graphics used to promote the varsity sports teams through Instagram and Twitter.
"You are always looking through Twitter and Instagram going 'next, next, next' and I want them to be able to stop and actually look at (her graphic) and go 'that's so cool, let me find out more about it,'" she said.
"I love athletics and I love graphic design, so having those two together is perfect," Tun concluded.
Jaquie and her WVU teammates will be making their final WVU Coliseum appearance later today when the Mountaineers take on 22nd-ranked Ohio State, 24th-ranked Penn State and NC State in a quad-meet scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m.
