TEMPE, Ariz. – Eight West Virginia University gymnasts were named the 2019 Academic All-Big 12 Gymnastics team today.
Of the eight Mountaineer honorees, three earned their awards with 4.0 grade point averages (GPA): senior Jaquie Tun (graphic design) and juniors Abby Kaufman (exercise physiology) and Julia Merwin (sport & exercise psychology). No other conference team had an honoree with a 4.0 GPA.
All eight Mountaineers were named to the first team. Seniors Carly Galpin (elementary education) and Kirah Koshinski (communication studies) earned their third career honors, while Kaufman, Merwin, Tun and junior Erica Fontaine (strategic communications) were honored for the second time; this is Fontaine's first career first-team recognition. Additionally, sophomores McKenna Linnen (marketing) and Sydney Marler (business) collected their first career awards.
In total, 32 gymnasts earned recognitions. Oklahoma had 11 selections, while Denver matched WVU's eight and Iowa State had five.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation also are eligible.
