Seven Wins Lead WVU Past Marshall

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 10, 2019) – The West Virginia University tennis team (8-3, 0-1 Big 12) used seven wins to defeat Marshall, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown
"Today was a good team win, and we handled the adversity very well this weekend," said head coach Miha Lisac. "I believe that we are starting to show that we are becoming more mature, and we are growing as a team. We are looking forward to our upcoming Big 12 matches."
Doubles Recap
The Mountaineers began Sunday with a setback from the No. 2 slot, as freshmen Nicole Roc and Anastasiia Bovolskaia were defeated by Madi Ballow and Liz Stefancic, 3-6, to open doubles.
Fortunately, WVU bounced back to claim the No. 1 match, where juniors Christina Jordan and Sofia Duran defeated Anna Smith and Daniela Dankanych, 6-3.
Starting in the No. 3 slot, sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau and senior Abigail Rosiello bested Victoria Walter and Matilde Mulatero, 6-2, to claim the doubles team point for WVU.
Singles Recap
The first singles match to finish came from the No. 3 slot, where Bovolskaia continued to build upon her impressive freshman season with a two-set victory, 6-2, 6-2, over Daniela Dankanych.
Starting in the No. 4 slot, Courteau made easy work of Madi Ballow, defeating her, 6-2, 6-3, to grab another two-set victory for the Mountaineers.
In the No. 1 slot, Jordan lost the first set, 1-6, to Anna Smith. After battling back and forth in the second set, Jordan prevailed, 6-4, to force a third-set tiebreaker. Unfortunately, Smith proved to be too much for Jordan, winning the final set, 6-3, to claim the match.
Duran started in the No. 2 slot against Victoria Walter but lost the first set, 4-6. The Guayaquil, Ecuador, native bounced back to win the second set, 6-4, to force WVU's second tiebreaker of the day. Duran prevailed in the final set, 6-3, to win the match. With the win, West Virginia claimed its fourth team point and clinched the match. The remaining matches were played out.
Starting in the No. 5 slot, sophomore Giovanna Caputo squared off against Liz Stefancic. The two would trade blow for blow in the first set until everything was knotted up, 6-6. Stefancic took the tiebreaker, 7-5, to claim the first set. Stefancic went on to win the second set, 6-2, to claim Marshall's third victory of the day.
In the final match from the No. 6 slot, Rosiello fell in the first set, 6-3, to Matilde Mulatero. The Morgantown, West Virginia, native fought back to win the second set, 6-4, to force a third-set, super tiebreaker. Rosiello went claimed the tiebreaking set, 10-6, to win the final match of the day.

Looking Ahead
The Mountaineers travel to Texas from March 15-17 to square off with Texas Tech and TCU. Friday's matchup with the Red Raiders is set to begin at 6 p.m. ET from Lubbock, while Sunday's contest against the Horned Frogs is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. ET from Fort Worth.
