
Divers Primed for Zone Championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Nine divers from the West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving team travel to the 2019 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, from March 11-13, in Annapolis, Maryland.
Freshman Camille Burt, senior Julia Calcut, senior Averly Hobbs, freshman Emma Longley, sophomore Callie Smith and senior Madelyn Woods of the women's team and redshirt freshman Jacob Cardinal Tremblay, freshman Nick Cover and freshman PJ Lenz of the men's team are set to represent the Mountaineers at the three-day meet.
Navy is set to play host to the event at Lejeune Hall. Monday's action, featuring men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter, is set to begin at 12 p.m. ET, while Tuesday's men's 3-meter and women's 1-meter competitions also are scheduled for 12 p.m. Men's and women's platform diving will take place on Wednesday, beginning at 1 p.m. Fans can follow along with live results and information, presented by divemeets.com.
The meet is set to determine the zone's qualifiers for the 2019 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
"Things are shaping up really well for the divers," WVU diving coach Michael Grapner said. "All of them have been training with Zones in mind this season, and I think they are prepared to compete. This team is fueled by positivity and enthusiasm for each other. If they can keep that up, then we are going to have an outstanding competition."
To qualify for the meet, the women were required to score at least 265 points on 1-meter, 280 points on 3-meter and 225 points on platform during the 2018-19 season. The men's qualifying standards were 300 points on 1-meter, 320 points on 3-meter and 300 points on platform.
The top-six men's divers on 1-meter, top five on 3-meter and top four on platform will qualify for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, while the women will advance the top-six divers on 1-meter and top five on 3-meter and platform. In all, 111 total divers qualified for the meet in at least one event.
Last time out, the Mountaineers competed at the 2019 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships, from Feb. 27-March 2, in Austin, Texas. On the men's side, Lenz earned a pair of bronze medals for third-place finishes on 1-meter (302.10) and 3-meter (330.45). He also placed fourth on platform with a score of 284.50. Cover placed third on platform (297.15) and fourth on 1-meter (298.25), while Cardinal Tremblay took fourth on 3-meter (326.65).
For the women, Calcut and Hobbs each registered a pair of championship final appearances. Hobbs placed seventh on 1-meter (276.40) and 3-meter (287.90) before winning the consolation final on platform, while Calcut took seventh on platform (209.90) and eighth on 3-meter (248.90). Additionally, Longley and Woods won the 1- and 3-meter consolation finals, respectively.
The WVU men finished second as a team at the conference meet, while the women's team took third.
Six Mountaineers competed at the Zone Championships in Piscataway, New Jersey, last season. Leading the way was Calcut, who earned finals appearances on 1- and 3-meter. The Zeeland, Michigan, native placed 10th on 3-meter with a combined score of 557.70 and 12th on 1-meter (494.25). Logan McHenry also registered finals appearances on 1- and 3-meter for the men. He finished eighth on 3-meter before taking 10th on 1-meter.
Along with Calcut and McHenry, Hobbs, Austin Smith, Callie Smith and Woods qualified for Zones last season.
