
Two Wins Highlight Opening Night at SPIRE

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team opened competition at the SPIRE Division I Classic with a pair of victories on Friday night in Geneva, Ohio.
Redshirt senior Madelin Gardner won the women's pole vault at the SPIRE Institute Indoor Track & Field Facility, while the Mountaineers' distance medley relay team also earned a victory. WVU competed in six events on the opening night of the two-day meet, recording a total of four top-eight finishes.
Gardner tallied her fourth win of the indoor season in the pole vault after recording a mark of 4.30 meters (14 feet, 1.25 inches). The Williamstown, West Virginia, native bested a field of 22 vaulters for the victory.
Along with Gardner, sophomore Mikayla Shute recorded a career-best mark of 3.67 meters (12 feet, 0.5 inches) to tie for sixth place, while freshman Molly DeBone tied for 10th with a career-best jump of 3.52 meters (11 feet, 6.5 inches). Freshman Audrey Schlosser took 19th place with a mark of 3.37 meters (11 feet, 0.75 inches).
In the distance medley relay, redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson, redshirt senior Bria Welker, freshman Mikenna Vanderheyden and redshirt sophomore Sarah Wills, who made her season debut on Friday night, combined for a first-place time of 11:52.96. FIU placed second in the event in 12:31.13. The performance marked the Mountaineers' second consecutive win in the DMR, dating back to last weekend's Akron Invitational.
Friday's events began with the women's weight throw, where freshman Sada Wright earned a career-best mark of 15.01 meters (49 feet, 3 inches), good for a seventh-place finish.
Additionally, Welker finished 11th in the women's 200 meters with a time of 25.76, while freshman Margaret Rymer took 12th place in the women's 600 meters in 1:39.98. Freshman Samantha Hatcher earned a 15th-place finish in the women's 1,000 meters in 3:00.62.
This weekend marks the first time WVU has competed at SPIRE since the 2014-15 campaign. West Virginia is joined by more than 25 teams at the meet, including Bowling Green, Dayton, DePaul, FIU, George Mason and others.
The meet concludes on Saturday, with action scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET. Fans can follow along with the Mountaineers with live results, presented by lightningtiming.com.
