Six Earn Big 12 Academic Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Six members of the West Virginia University women's basketball team were named to the 2019 Academic All-Big 12 Women's Basketball Team, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Senior center Theresa Ekhelar, redshirt junior guard Tynice Martin, senior guard Katrina Pardee, junior guard Lucky Rudd and sophomore guard Nia Staples were garnered first team honors. Senior forward Naomi Davenport was named to the second team.
Hailing from Cedar Park, Texas, Pardee is an exercise physiology major and was one of eight student-athletes with three or more Academic All-Big 12 selections. She has earned mention on the list for three years after earning Academic All-Rookie Team honors as a freshman in 2016.
Ekhelar, a multidisciplinary studies major from Woodbridge, New Jersey, was honored for the second straight season, as was Staples, a sport and exercise psychology major from Cincinnati, Ohio.
Atlanta-native Martin, a multidisciplinary studies major, and Rudd, a multidisciplinary studies major from Kernersville, North Carolina, both earned first-time honors. Davenport, who hails from Cincinnati and is majoring in multidisciplinary studies, is also a first-time honoree.
A total of 45 student-athletes were selected to the 2019 Academic All-Big 12 Women's Basketball Team. Thirty-five selections make up the first team, while 10 garnered second team recognition.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests.
Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
