MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Led by sophomore Etienne Papineau, the West Virginia University golf team is tied for second place after two rounds of play at the Seminole Intercollegiate at Golden Eagle Country Club in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday.
Papineau used five birdies and an eagle to finish six-under-par with a career-low 66 in the first round. He finished one-over with a 73 in the second round, finishing the day at five under with a 36-hole total of 139. Papineau is currently in a tie for fourth place.
The Mountaineers shot 284-285=569 to end the day at seven-under-par as a team. They're tied with No. 29 Louisville and sit five strokes back from leader Jacksonville (564). No. 5 Wake Forest is fourth at six under.
"Today was a complete team effort as all five guys contributed," coach Sean Covich said. "Obviously Etienne (Papineau) had a really good day, but it was impressive to see true freshman Kurtis Grant play so solid. Max (Sear) and Matt (Sharpstene) bounced back and played well in the afternoon and Logan finished off his round strong. I look forward to tomorrow; we expect some rain and wind so will see just how much we have matured since last year."
Freshman Kurtis Grant joins Papineau in the top 10 with one round remaining. Grant registered four birdies in each round to post matching scores of 71, sitting two-under par at 142. He is in a seven-way tie for 10th place.
Senior Max Sear put up five birdies and an eagle in the first round, but also carded four bogies and three double-bogeys to finish one-over-par with a 73. He bounced back with four birdies in the second round, shooting a 71 for one-under par. Sear's two-round total of 144 has him at even par and in a tie for 23rd place, a 13-spot improvement from the first round.
Sophomore Logan Perkins posted five birdies across two rounds, shooting 74-72=146. He is two over and tied for 38th place. Classmate Matthew Sharpstene had six birdies across 36 holes but finished four-over par in the first round with a 76. He bounced back to shoot one-under-par in the second round with a 71 and is tied for 41st with a 147 for three-over par.
West Virginia returns to the course on Sunday for the third and final round. The Mountaineers are paired with Jacksonville and Louisville in tee times starting at 9:10 a.m. off hole No. 1.
