PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team overcame an early deficit to sweep the competition tonight at Pitt's Fitzgerald Field House with a 195.65 score.
The host Panthers scored 195.425 and finished in second place, and Ball State placed third with a 195.025 total.
Sitting in second place after opening the meet with a 48.625 on balance beam, the Mountaineers (15-5, 0-3) finished first on floor exercise, vault and uneven bars to power to their third win of the season over the Panthers and their fifth meet sweep of the year.
"I loved our energy. I felt like we were lacking a little bit on beam, and we challenged them and their energy level," Mountaineer coach
Jason Butts said. "They really brought the energy on floor, vault and bars. It's always nice to get another win over Pitt – we're 3-0 over them this season, and I'll take that.
"We hit 24 routines today. I liked our consistency, hard work and energy."
WVU's score is its second-best of the season and top mark earned away from Morgantown. The Mountaineers' 15 victories are the most for a team since WVU earned 21 in Butts' first season in 2012.
