MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following an impressing 49.5 showing on floor exercise on Feb. 17, the West Virginia University gymnastics team moves up one spot to No. 9 on floor in this week's Road to Nationals Rankings.
The Mountaineers (13-5, 0-3) moved up in the event rankings thanks to a 49.214 season average. WVU also ranks No. 23 on vault with a 48.864 average.
After three weeks at No. 27, the Mountaineers moved up one spot this week to No. 26 overall nationally with an improved season average of 195.182.
Seniors
Kirah Koshinski and
Jaquie Tun continue to own three combined national rankings. Koshinski, a native of Berwick, Pennsylvania, ranks No. 12 on floor (9.907 avg.) and No. 22 on vault (9.861 avg.). Tun, a Chattanooga, Tennessee, native, ranks No. 27 on floor (9.8825 avg.).
The Mountaineers continue to rank No. 3 overall in the Southeast Region. WVU moves up to No. 2 on floor exercise and also ranks No. 3 on vault and No. 6 on uneven bars (48.596 a) and balance beam (48.507 avg.).
Koshinski leads four Mountaineers in the floor rankings and sits at No. 5. Tun follows at No. 9, and sophomore
McKenna Linnen and junior
Abby Kaufman rank No. 23 (9.807 avg.) and No. 25 (9.796 avg.), respectively.
Koshinski also ranks No. 4 on vault, with Tun trailing at No. 24 (9.761 avg.).
Freshman
Esperanza Abarca paces WVU on bars and beam and ranks No. 13 (9.8 avg.) and No. 16 (9.767 avg.) on the respective events. Tun ranks No. 22 (9.764 avg.) on bars, and freshman
Kendra Combs sits at No. 23 (9.763 avg.).
Kaufman continues to rank No. 10 in the all-around with an improved average of 38.821. Freshman
Rachel Hornung ranks No. 14 (38.6 avg.), and Koshinski follows at No. 17 (38.25 avg.).
WVU moved back up to No. 3 in the Big 12 Conference. The Mountaineers also rank No. 3 on floor and sit at No. 4 on vault, bars and beam.
Koshinski ranks No. 4 on floor exercise among Big 12 peers. She also ranks No. 9 on vault. Tun sits at No. 8 on floor, and Kaufman ranks No. 10 in the all-around.
The Mountaineers tallied their second-best showing of the season with a second place, 195.575 total on Feb. 17 at the WVU Coliseum. Utah State won the meet with a 196.075 score, and Pitt and Cornell finished third (195.1) and fourth (193.075), respectively.
WVU earned season highs on floor (49.5) and uneven bars (49.175). The Mountaineers' floor score was the fifth-best mark earned in program history and WVU's top floor total since scoring 49.575 on March 6, 2016. Koshinski earned the floor win with a career-high 9.975.
Up next, WVU competes twice in three days. First up is a trip to Pittsburgh on Feb. 22, where the Mountaineers will compete against the Panthers and Ball State at 7 p.m. inside Fitzgerald Field House.
The Mountaineers will conclude the weekend against No. 1 Oklahoma on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum. It's the Wendy M. Roach Invitational, and the Mountaineers will wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness month. The WVU gymnasts stand with all those who have been affected by any form of cancer, and the Mountaineers ask fans to wear the color which represents the cancer of their choosing and to "Color the Coliseum for Cancer."
Once again, the Mountaineers will accept sundry item donations, such as socks, body lotion, nail polish and magazines, for donation to Morgantown's Betty Puskar Breast Care Center.
A pre-meet cheer clinic will be held from 11 a.m. – noon Sunday. Registration is free for all participants under 13. Clinic participants will receive free admission to the meet, and pizza will be provided.
