Dixon Named Big 12 Swimmer of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior David Dixon of the West Virginia University men's swimming and diving team has been named the Big 12 Men's Swimmer of the Week, as announced by the league on Wednesday.
Dixon earns the bi-weekly conference honor for the second consecutive week and second time this season after leading the Mountaineer men's team to a victory in the first-ever WVU Invitational at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park from Nov. 21-23.
"David's swim in the 200 fly ranks among the top swims in the event this season," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "His performance should secure his invitation to his third NCAA Championships. I'm very happy for him and this honor."
The accolade marks the fifth for Dixon in his career, as he collected six total wins at the WVU Invite. His performance at the three-day meet was highlighted by a record-breaking time in the 200 butterfly, as he touched the wall in 1:41.59.
The Richmond, Virginia, native broke the event's previous school record of 1:42.15, which he set last season at the Big 12 Championship. With the mark, Dixon held the top time in the 200 fly in Division I men's swimming as of Nov. 23. He bested Missouri's Micah Slaton by more than a full second to earn the top time of the 2019-20 season up to that point.
An All-Big 12 First Team honoree last season, Dixon's six victories at the three-day, mid-season invitational came in the 100 fly (46.73), 200 fly (1:41.59), 200 individual medley (1:46.21), 200 medley relay (1:26.99), 400 medley relay (3:11.35) and 400 freestyle relay (2:55.61).
Dixon's wins helped lead the WVU men to a victory at the WVU Invitational, as the squad tallied 2,111 team points to grab a victory over second-place Kenyon College (1,579.5). The Mountaineer women's team placed second at the meet with 1,410 points, behind William & Mary with 1,615.5.
This award marks Dixon's second Big 12 Men's Swimmer of the Week honor this season. He previously received the accolade on Nov. 13 for his performance in the Mountaineers' victory in the West Virginia State Games.
The WVU men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to dual-meet action on Jan. 4, 2020, as they take on rival Pitt at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park. Before then, 20 members of the squads are set to travel to Atlanta, Georgia, to compete in USA Swimming's 2019 Toyota U.S. Open. Action at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Dec. 4, and continues through Saturday, Dec. 7.
