Box Score The good-game, average-game pattern continues for West Virginia's birthday boy OscarÂ
Tshiebwe.
Â
Tonight was the good-game version asÂ
Tshiebwe scored 19 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead the Mountaineers to a 75-63 victory over Wichita State to claim this year's Cancun Challenge in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Â
InÂ
Tshiebwe's three good games this year he scored 20 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a road win at Pitt, tallied a season-high 21 points with 10 rebounds in a home win against Boston University and then tonight's 19-point, 18-rebound double-double.
"He pursues the ball now," West Virginia coach
Bob Huggins said of his fabulous freshman.
Â
Tshiebwe was named the tournament's most valuable performer, but he was by no means a one-man show tonight.
Â
ForwardÂ
Emmitt Matthews Jr. added 13 points and made a big second-half 3 when the Shockers were making a run to try and cut into West Virginia's lead.
Â
Senior guard ChaseÂ
Harler hit perhaps the biggest 3 of the game with five minutes left when Wichita State got West Virginia's lead down to six. He also played well defensively.
Â
"I just felt like Chase gave us our best opportunity to stop their perimeter guys," Huggins said. "I wanted to make sure we had somebody with experience who could deal with all of the screens and all of the things that they do."
Â
Jordan McCabe, who watched freshman point guard
Miles McBride finish off Northern Iowa last night, was the player Huggins went with at the end of tonight's game and he responded with seven critical free throws when his teammates were struggling there to finish with 9 points.
Â
Derek Culver scored 7 points and was a rebound away from pulling down double-digit boards as the Mountaineers controlled a really good rebounding Wichita State team on the glass 48-31.
Â
"I think (
Tshiebwe and Culver) are two of the premier rebounders certainly in our league, and probably in the country," Huggins said. "When one gets nine the other one gets (18).
Â
Guard
Sean McNeil came off the bench to hit two big 3s in the first half and finished with 8 points as nine different players got into the scoring column.
Â
West Virginia's powerful front line outscored Wichita State in the paint 30-16 and was a major factor in holding the Shockers to just 30.6 percent on their 62 field goal attempts.
Â
The 6-0 Mountaineers were so dominating that Wichita State only held the lead for 15 seconds of tonight's game.
Â
The only area where West Virginia wasn't exceptional was at the free throw line where it missed nine of its first 15 attempts, but even there it was much better down the stretch.
Â
The Mountaineers shot 14-of-19 in the second half to finish the game 18-of-30 overall.
Â
Wichita State, which came into tonight's game undefeated with a 6-0 record and had little difficulty defeating South Carolina on Tuesday night, got a game-high 22 points from Erik Stevenson.
Â
He was the lone Shocker to reach double digits.
Â
Huggins said he really wanted this Cancun Challenge championship for his returning players who suffered through a miserable 15-21 record last year.
Â
"They believed in us and endured, and they love West Virginia," he said. "They love the Mountaineers, love being a part of it and they deserved to have some good things happen for them.
Â
"What makes me feel so good is they love West Virginia," Huggins continued. "They love being a part of it. They love the people. They love the fans the way they support us. They're the first ones to run over there and sing Country Roads with the fans in the stands. It's been a while since we've had that."
Â
West Virginia will fly back to Clarksburg tomorrow and will begin preparation to face Rhode Island on Sunday at the Coliseum.
Â
The Rams defeated West Virginia 83-70 at Mohegan Sun Arena last year and kind of rubbed the Mountaineers' noses in the dirt a little bit in that victory.
Â
"They embarrassed us a year ago and that to me is a game we should be looking forward to," Huggins said.
Â
That's something to look forward to as well as perhapsÂ
Tshiebwe finally snapping this good-game, average-game pattern he's gotten into.
