MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – It's a quick two-day turnaround for the West Virginia University men's basketball team, coming off a 68-53 victory over Pitt last Friday night in Pittsburgh.
The 2-0 Mountaineers are facing Northern Colorado tonight at the WVU Coliseum in a Cancun Challenge preliminary game.
West Virginia will play Boston University at the Coliseum Friday night before departing for Riviera Maya, Mexico, to play Northern Iowa at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya on Tuesday night. The Mountaineers will face either South Carolina or Wichita State in the concluding game next Wednesday night.
WVU was impressive in its 15-point road victory at rival Pitt on Friday night to snap its 10-game road losing streak spanning the entire 2019 season. Against the Panthers, freshman forward
Oscar Tshiebwe was a force near the basket with 20 points and 17 rebounds to become one of just four freshman players in school history to produce at least 20 points and 17 rebounds in a game.
The others were Warren Baker, who will analyze tonight's game for AT&T Sportsnet, Maurice Robinson and teammate
Derek Culver, who did it multiple times last season.
"That's his best game so far," West Virginia coach
Bob Huggins said of Tshiebwe's performance against Pitt, which also included three blocks. "He's got great hands. He takes a beating physically and it doesn't bother him. It's just hard to get the ball out of his hands once he's got both hands on it."
Sophomore forward
Emmitt Matthews Jr. contributed 17 points and eight rebounds while shooting guard
Sean McNeil came off the bench to add 11, including shooting 3-of-5 from 3-point range.
West Virginia had a commanding 51-35 advantage on the glass and limited Pitt to just 3-of-25 from the floor in the second half and 30.2 percent shooting overall for the game.
Northern Colorado brings a 2-2 record into tonight's game with victories over Incarnate Word and Colorado College, and losses to Texas and Northern Iowa.
Sophomore guard Sam Masten was UNC's leading scorer against the Longhorns with 11, while 6-3 senior guard Jonah Radebaugh pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
Last Saturday, Northern Iowa needed overtime to knock off Northern Colorado in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Radebaugh led Northern Colorado with 24 points while Bodie Hume, a 6-6 guard, added 17 points on 4 of 8 shooting for 3.
According to our
Tony Caridi, 47 percent of Northern Colorado's shot attempts come from 3-point distance this season. The Bears have tried 111 triples in four games (an average of 28 per game) and are making 38 percent of them.
Hume is one of five UNC double-digit scorers with a team-best 17.5 points per game. Tonight's game will be Northern Colorado's first-ever visit to the WVU Coliseum.
