Fall Classic Tuesday, Open to Fans

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team will hold its annual Fall Classic Intrasquad on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 4 p.m., inside Cary Gym.
Fans are encouraged to attend the intrasquad for their first look at the 2020 Mountaineers. Admission is free. Mountaineer Maniac students also will have the chance to experience gymnastics for themselves prior to the event, and the first 200 members in attendance will receive free pizza and t-shirts.
The Fall Classic will simulate a formal meet, as the Mountaineers will split into two teams and the gymnasts will compete full routines in front of judges and fans. Lineups will be posted at WVUsports.com early Tuesday morning, and a complete recap will be provided on Wednesday.
"The format is going to be really crowd friendly," associate head coach Travis Doak said. "The Mountaineer Maniacs are coming, and they will be able to move around the gym and stand close to the equipment. It's exciting when you get to watch what they do up close, so it will be a cool experience for all in attendance."
The Mountaineers opened preseason on Sept. 18, with their first official practice at Cary Gym. Eleven Mountaineers, including seniors Chloe Cluchey, Erica Fontaine, Abby Kaufman and Julia Merwin, return from a 2019 squad which posted a 19-9 record.
Additionally, five freshmen look to make their Fall Classic debut on Tuesday: Emily Holmes-Hackerd, Maya Kraus, Abbie Pierson, Kianna Yancey and Kayla Yancey.
"I think this meet is going to be a great indication of how the season is going to start because we have so many new routines," Doak said. "Over half the lineup is going to be different. Our lead offs and anchors on every event are going to be different, so this is why this meet is essential."
"Tuesday will probably be the most routines we ever had going at a Fall Classic," assistant coach Kaylyn Millick said. "I think it will be good for them to have judges there, and I can't wait to see how some of them handle pressure with harder skill sets.
"Chloe is back after an ankle setback last year, so we will get to see her in action on every event. Kendra (Combs) also is doing a lot. She only competed on bars last year, but she will be doing three events for us this year. She has done a really good job, so I'm excited to see her compete. Kianna, Abbie and Emily are doing the all-around as freshmen, so it will be exciting to see who shows up and performs."
Last season, the Mountaineers qualified for the 2019 NCAA Regional Championships for the 40th time in program history, the 36th time in NCAA competition, and placed fourth in the second of two second-round quad meets at the 2019 NCAA Ann Arbor Regional Championships on April 5, with a 195.425 score. The score was WVU's fifth-best mark at an NCAA regional.
Prior to the Regional Championships, WVU placed fourth at the Big 12 Gymnastics Championship with a 195.6 score.
