Duo Upsets Two Top-15 Seeds on Day Two

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Highlighted by a pair of top-15 upsets in the opening rounds of doubles play, the West Virginia University tennis team finished day two of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's Atlantic Regional on Saturday evening at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
"We had a good day of competition today and some very good wins," WVU coach Miha Lisac said. "We have good matches coming up tomorrow and throughout the rest of the tournament."
Doubles Recap
Senior Sofia Duran and sophomore Nicole Roc opened Saturday's action in the doubles round of 32, as the pair squared off against No. 4-seed Rosie Johanson and Natasha Subhash of Virginia. Duran and Roc suffered the loss, dropping the contest, 6-8.
However, junior Anne-Sophie Courteau and freshman Kat Lyman were the story for the Mountaineers in doubles play, as the duo secured two upsets against opponents seeded within the top 16.
In the pair's first contest, Courteau and Lyman went toe-to-toe with No. 2-seed and preseason No. 27-ranked Holly Hutchinson and Brooke Pilkington of Old Dominion. The duos battled back and forth throughout until the contest was knotted up at 7-7. In the tiebreaker, Courteau and Lyman prevailed and secured the upset, as they claimed the deciding frame, 7-4.
Courteau and Lyman kept things rolling for West Virginia in the round of 16, as the duo squared off against No. 15-seed Natalia Perry and Mila Saric of William & Mary. The Mountaineer bested Perry and Saric, securing an 8-5 victory to place them in the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw.

In the first singles match to finish, Courteau dropped her opening-round match to host Virginia Tech's Nika Kozar in straight sets, 4-6, 5-7.
Duran squared off against No. 15-seed Natalia Perry of William & Mary in the singles round of 64. After falling in the first set, 5-7, Duran quickly rebounded to win the second set, 6-4, to force a third-set tiebreaker. In the final frame, Perry emerged victorious, claiming the deciding set, 6-4, to win the match.
Sophomore Anastasiia Bovolskaia was the last to finish in the singles round of 64, as she went toe-to-toe with VCU's Kanako Yano. The Irkutsk, Russia, native claimed the first set, 7-5, before a back-and-forth second set ensued. The two traded blows in the second frame until it was tied at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, Bovolskaia bested Yano, 7-2, to claim the match and advance to the singles round of 32 for the second consecutive year.

In tomorrow's quarterfinals of the doubles main draw, Courteau and Lyman are set for another top-seeded foe, as they are scheduled to square off against No. 5-seed Sofia Munera and Amber O'Dell of Virginia.
Bovolskaia is set for a matchup with Navy's Kacey Moore in the singles round of 32.
