WVU Opens ITA Regional in Solid Fashion

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team used a strong performance in the opening round of doubles play to open tournament action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's Atlantic Regional on Friday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
"It was a solid start for us today," WVU coach Miha Lisac said. "We have a weekend of good competition ahead of us, and we will build on today's performances going into tomorrow."

In the singles qualification bracket, sophomore Nicole Roc began the regional tournament on a high note for West Virginia, as she defeated No. 3-seed Miranda Bishard of Duquesne in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Roc moved on to the second round of the qualification bracket to square off with Navy's Meghana Kommaraju. The Chicago, Illinois, native dropped her second match to Kommaraju, 3-6, 1-6.
Lyman suffered only her second singles loss of the season in the opening round against Liberty's Esther Lovato. After dropping the first set, 3-6, Lyman rebounded and took the second set, 7-5, to force a third-set tiebreaker. Lovato won the final frame, 7-5, to decide the match.

Following a pair of losses in singles, West Virginia responded well in doubles play. In the opening round, senior Sofia Duran paired with Roc to secure a win against Radford's Katey Fruehauf and Malin Falk, as they bested the Highlander duo, 8-1.
Junior Anne-Sophie Courteau paired with Lyman to bag the Mountaineers' second doubles victory in the round of 64, as the duo toppled Penn State's Olivia Ryan and Frederikke Svarre, 8-5.
Both WVU pairs advanced to the doubles round of 32.

Looking Ahead
In tomorrow's singles main draw of 64, Duran is set for a first-round matchup with No. 15-seed Natalia Perry of William & Mary, Courteau is set to square off with host Virginia Tech's Nika Kozar, while sophomore Anastasiia Bovolskaia rounds out Saturday's singles main draw with a contest against VCU's Kanako Yano.
West Virginia is scheduled to open tomorrow's doubles round of 32 against Virginia and Old Dominion. Duran and Roc's are set to square off against No. 4-seed Rosie Johanson and Natasha Subhash of UVA, while Courteau and Lyman will go toe-to-toe with No. 2-seed Holly Hutchinson and Brooke Pilkington of ODU.
