Mountaineers Rank No. 22

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team debuts at No. 22 in the first Road to Nationals Rankings of the 2019 season.
Today's position marks the third consecutive year the Mountaineers (1-2, 0-1) have sat in the top 25 of the first national rankings of the season.
WVU's ranking is based on its 194.15 score earned in a third-place finish at the Cancun Classic on Jan. 4, in Cancun, Mexico. The Mountaineers share the ranking with Minnesota and sit 0.125 points behind Iowa State, who ranks No. 21 and finished second at the Classic.
The Mountaineers also are nationally ranked No. 8 on floor exercise (49.05), No. 15 on balance beam (48.775) and No. 17 on vault (48.8).
Only three teams from the Southeast Region competed last week. WVU ranks No. 2 overall and on each event but uneven bars (47.525).
All but Denver competed in the Big 12 Conference last week. The Mountaineers rank No. 3 overall. WVU sits at No. 2 on beam and floor, and No. 3 on vault and bars.
Individually, senior Kirah Koshinski owns three national rankings. Following her winning, 9.925 floor performance at the Cancun Classic, the Berwick, Pennsylvania, native ranks No. 8; her score was the second-best mark awarded last weekend. Koshinski also ranks No. 42 in the all-around (38.25) and No. 48 on vault (9.8).
Senior Jaquie Tun follows Koshinski in the floor rankings and checks-in at No. 25 (9.825), while junior Abby Kaufman precedes Koshinski in the all-around rankings and sits at No. 41 (38.375).
Regionally, six Mountaineers are ranked on every event this week.
Koshinski sits alone at No. 1 on floor. Tun follows at No. 4, while sophomore McKenna Linnen ranks No. 8 (9.8). and junior Erica Fontaine ranks No. 10 (9.75). Kaufman sits at No. 11 (9.725), and freshman Rachel Hornung ranks No. 17 (8.9).
Koshinski paces WVU on vault and ranks No. 4. Junior Julia Merwin and Hornung are tied at No. 5 (9.775), and Tun ranks No. 9 (9.75). Sophomore Michelle Waldron ranks No. 13 (9.7), and Kaufman follows at No. 15 (9.6).
Hornung ranks a team-best No. 3 on beam (9.8), and Fontaine follows at No. 5 (9.775). Kaufman and senior Carly Galpin are tied at No. 9 (9.75), and Linnen follows at No. 11 (9.7). Koshinski ranks No. 16 (9.525).
After opening the Classic with a team-best 9.8 showing on uneven bars, freshman Esperanza Abarca ranks No. 5. Tun sits at No. 8 (9.75), and Merwin follows at No. 12 (9.675). Kaufman ranks No. 16 (9.3), and Koshinski and sophomore Sydney Marler rank No. 17 (9.0).
Kaufman and Koshinski rank No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, in the all-around.
In the Big 12, Koshinski ranks No. 2 on floor. Tun follows at No. 5, and Linnen sits at No. 9.
