MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons unveiled the 2019 outdoor track and field schedule on Tuesday.
The schedule features three regular-season home meets at The Track & Field Complex at Mylan Park, the new home of the Mountaineers. In all, WVU will compete in 11 meets throughout the outdoor season leading up to the Big 12 Outdoor Championship in May.
"The biggest change to the outdoor schedule is incredibly exciting to both current student-athletes and the future of the program," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "We're very excited to be hosting three meets. There's nothing like sleeping in your own bed, being in front of your fans and competing on a super-fast track and field facility. The rest of the schedule followed normal patterns from past years, aside from us being able to compete at home."
For the second consecutive season, the Mountaineers open the outdoor campaign at the 49er Classic, from March 14-16, in Charlotte, North Carolina. From there, WVU is set to host its first-ever meet at the new facility, the West Virginia Open, on March 23, in Morgantown.
Later, WVU will participate in three meets from March 27-30, as members of the team will travel to the Texas Relays (March 27-30, in Austin, Texas), the Raleigh Relays (March 29-30, in Raleigh, North Carolina) and the Stanford Invitational (March 29-30, in Stanford, California).
On Saturday, April 6, WVU makes its first of two visits to Charlottesville, Virginia, to compete in a quad meet against Virginia, Maryland and Pitt. From there, the Mountaineers travel to the Bison Outdoor Classic, hosted by Bucknell, from April 12-13, in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
After a trip to the Virginia Challenge, from April 19-20, in Charlottesville, WVU splits for a pair of meets on the weekend of April 25-27. First, a select group of Mountaineers will compete at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. In Morgantown, West Virginia will host the State Farm Friends of Track Showcase on April 26-27.
WVU's third and final home meet of the outdoor slate concludes the regular season, as WVU will host the Mountaineer Open on Saturday, May 4.
Oklahoma is set to host the 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Championship, from May 10-12, in Norman. Last year, WVU finished ninth at the conference's outdoor meet.
The 2019 NCAA East Preliminary Round is set for May 23-25, in Jacksonville, Florida. The 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships will take place from June 5-8, in Austin, Texas.
Seven Mountaineers qualified to compete at the East Prelims last season. Amy Cashin (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Madelin Gardner (pole vault) each earned trips to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, where the duo registered a pair of All-America honors.
Gardner finished eighth in the pole vault at NCAAs, marking her first career All-America First Team accolade. Cashin finished 13th in the steeplechase prelims, good for All-America Second Team recognition.
The Track & Field Complex at Mylan Park, which officially celebrated its opening at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 26, 2018, has an eight-lane competition track with a top-of-the-line running surface, areas for long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, hammer throw, discus throw, javelin throw, running and hurdling.
The new venue seats more than 1,000 spectators and provides stadium necessities such as a ticket booth, press box, restroom and concessions facilities.
WVU's indoor season continues from Jan. 25-26, as the Mountaineers travel to University Park, Pennsylvania, for the PSU National Open. Action at Penn State's Ashenfelter Indoor Track is set to begin on Friday at 4 p.m. Competition continues on Saturday at 11 a.m.
