MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After opening the 2019 season with three consecutive road meets, the West Virginia University gymnastics team opens its home season at the WVU Coliseum this week, and to coincide with the home opener, the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced several exciting promotions.
"I am so excited to bring this team back to Morgantown after three long weeks on the road," Mountaineer coach Jason Butts said. "We have a great slate of promotions lined up which features a few new concepts, such as Military Appreciation Day. These promotions, combined with the nationally ranked opponents who will be visiting the WVU Coliseum this season, ensure that our fans will enjoy their time following us this year."
For the second season, fans will be rewarded for loyal attendance, as "Stick-It" cards will be available for pickup prior to the Mountaineers' home season opener against George Washington and Kent State at 2 p.m. on Jan. 27. Fans will receive their first sticker that afternoon and also can earn stickers for attending the next three home meets. A completed card with four stickers will earn fans free admittance to the team's home finale on March 17.
It's Daddy-Daughter Day on Jan. 27, and a brunch of donuts, coffee and juice will be offered to all fans. It's also Mountaineer Kids Club Day, featuring Mr. Twister.
WVU's Big 12 Conference home opener, against Iowa State and Denver on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m., is Military Appreciation Day. Free admission will be provided to all past and present military members who show their I.D. Family and guests of the military members will receive group rate tickets of $3 at the door.
Also on Feb. 2, select concessions will be available for $1 each, and red, white and blue light-up wands will be given to the first 500 fans.
WVU will host its first-ever Heart Healthy Meet on Sunday, Feb. 17, with action against Pitt, Utah State and Cornell set for 1 p.m. A free Zumba class will be offered on the WVU Coliseum concourse pre-meet, and heart-shaped stress balls will be given to the first 500 fans.
The Wendy M. Roach Invitational is set for Sunday, Feb. 24, when reigning Big 12 Conference champion Oklahoma visits at 2 p.m. A pre-meet cheer clinic will be held from 11 a.m. - noon, and registration is free for all participants under 13. Clinic participants will receive free admission to the meet, and pizza will be provided.
The Mountaineers' home season finale on March 17 is Senior Day, and the team will honor seniors Carly Galpin, Kirah Koshinski and Jaquie Tun following the 2 p.m. meet against Ohio State, Penn State and NC State.
The Mountaineers will be available to meet with fans and sign autographs at "Chalk Talk" after every home regular-season meet this year.
The Mountaineer Ticket Office continues to offer a Varsity Sports Flex Plan, a bargain for families who plan on attending a WVU varsity sporting event. Flex plan packages are available for just $20.
