MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team concludes its season-opening road swing with a tri meet at Air Force, with Cortland, on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 8 p.m. ET, inside Cadet West Gym in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Riding a wave of momentum following a first-place showing at the Pitt quad meet on Jan. 12, the Mountaineers (4-2, 0-1) face a pair of foes for the first time in the Falcons (0-2, 0-1 MPSF) and the Dragons (0-3).
"The team is excited to go to a new gym and to compete in a different environment," Mountaineer coach
Jason Butts said. "This team has a lot of momentum surrounding it right now. We had a great practice after our wins at Pitt. I think the gymnasts know they can score well on the road now, and I'm excited to see what we do this weekend."
WVU will open the meet on balance beam for the second time in as many weeks. The Mountaineers' complete rotation order is balance beam, floor exercise, vault and uneven bars.
Despite sitting just outside the Road to Nationals Top 25 this week at No. 26 with a 194.825 season average, the Mountaineers boast a pair of event national rankings, as WVU is No. 5 on floor exercise (49.163 avg.) and No. 11 on vault (49.0 avg.).
A pair of Mountaineer seniors are nationally ranked on two events each.
Kirah Koshinski ranks No. 10 on floor (9.912 avg.) and No. 19 on vault (9.863 avg.).
Jaquie Tun ranks No. 24 on floor (9.875 avg.) and No. 41 on vault (9.825 avg.). They pace the Mountaineers with three podium finishes each and a combined four event wins.
Last week, WVU tallied a season-high 195.5 in wins over Pitt (194.75), Utah State (194.6) and Eastern Michigan (192.7) at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Mountaineers hit 24-for-24 for the first time this season and earned event victories on floor (49.275), vault (49.2) and uneven bars (48.775).
Koshinski and Tun tied for the floor win at Pitt with matching 9.9 marks, a career-best score for Tun. Koshinski also won vault with a season-best 9.925 total. Freshman
Esperanza Abarca paced WVU on bars for the second time in as many weeks and placed second with a 9.8 score, while classmate
Rachel Hornung finished fourth on beam with a 9.7 total. Junior
Abby Kaufman scored 38.925 and finished second in the all-around.
Led by 12-year coach Doug Day, Air Force opened the 2019 season with a third place, 191.875 showing at No. 16 Boise State on Jan. 13. The host Broncos won the tri meet with a 196.4 total, and San Jose State finished second with a 193.05 mark. Sophomore Tyler Davis finished fourth in the all-around with a 38.4 score, while sophomore Cam Barber and freshman Daija Stevenson earned the Falcons' best event finish of the meet, placing fourth on balance beam with 9.825 scores.
Under first-year coach Sierra Day, Cortland opened the 2019 season with a fourth place, 183.45 mark at Maryland on Jan. 13. The host Terrapins won the quad meet with a 193.85 score, West Chester placed second with a 190.65 total and Penn finished third with a 190.55 mark. Sophomore Emma Schulz paced Cortland on beam and finished seventh overall with a 9.675 score. She also scored a team-high 9.625 on floor for an 11th-place finish. Senior Rachel Filipski finished eighth on vault (9.625), and freshman Megan Hanley placed 11th on uneven bars (9.45).
Saturday is a family reunion, as Cortland coach Sierra Day is the daughter of Air Force coach Doug Day.
