MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's swimming and diving team travels to University Park, Pennsylvania, for a dual meet at Penn State on Friday, Jan. 18.
Competition at the Nittany Lions' McCoy Natatorium is set to begin at 4 p.m. ET.
"This will be our last meet before the Big 12 Championship for the men, and Penn State offers a great opportunity for us to travel and compete at a high level," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "We'll look to continue to improve from last week and use this to identify the areas we need to focus on for the end of our season."
Friday marks the first time the Mountaineers will compete against Penn State since 2014-15. WVU is looking for its first win over the Nittany Lions since the 2010-11 campaign, when the Mountaineer men earned a 125-116 win on Oct. 16, 2010, at the WVU Natatorium in Morgantown.
Last time out, WVU posted a 233-64 victory over TCU on Jan. 12, in Morgantown. The Mountaineers won 15 of 16 events over the Horned Frogs to register their sixth consecutive win against the Big 12 Conference foe.
Junior Jack Frazier led the charge for WVU, recording a pair of wins in the 100 and 200 butterflies. Senior Merwane El Merini and sophomore Angelo Russo each won an individual event and were a part of two first-place relay teams against the Horned Frogs. El Merini notched a win in the 50 freestyle, while Russo won the 100 backstroke.
On springboard, redshirt freshman Jacob Cardinal Tremblay (1-meter) and freshman Nick Cover (3-meter) also came away with individual victories.
The Senior Day meet was the final collegiate competition in WVU Natatorium history, which has served as the home of the Mountaineers since 1975. More than 150 alumni visited Morgantown for the historic weekend.
With the win, WVU improved to 4-1 in dual meets this season, including 1-0 in the conference. The Mountaineers have won 12 of their last 13 dual meets, dating back to the 2016-17 campaign.
Penn State is led by sixth-year coach Tim Murphy. The Nittany Lions enter the meet with a 1-5 dual-meet record, featuring a 183-109 win over George Washington on Oct. 12. Penn State also has battled Virginia (Oct. 6), Virginia Tech (Oct. 26-27), Ohio State (Oct. 26-27), Navy (Jan. 12) and North Carolina (Jan. 12) in dual meets this season.
Friday's meet is the Mountaineer men's final regular-season competition before the 2019 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship, which is set for Feb. 27-March 2, in Austin, Texas.
