MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The top-ranked West Virginia University rifle team opens the 2018-19 season at Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) foe Akron on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 10:30 a.m., at the Robert A. Pinn Shooting Range in Akron, Ohio.
The Mountaineers, the 2018 NCAA National Runners-Up, are the nine-time reigning GARC Champions.
"We're excited to get the season underway," 13-year coach Jon Hammond said. "There's a lot of anticipation and excitement surrounding the match. I don't think we have specific goals other than to shoot our best match and to make it a learning opportunity. That's a theme for the team this year – we want to learn something from every match and put those lessons back into training. It's a long season for us, and we're excited to get it underway and hit the road for our first road trip."
WVU is 16-0 all-time against the Zips. Last season, the Mountaineers earned a 4711-4651 victory against Akron at the WVU Rifle Range on Jan 14. Senior Ginny Thrasher finished first in air rifle with a 598 mark, and sophomore David Koenders shot a winning 586 smallbore.
Thrasher and senior team captain Will Anti lead the Mountaineers this season, who return seven letter winners from 2017-18. Combined, the group owns two NCAA National Championship titles, five individual NCAA titles, three GARC regular-season titles and three GARC Championships titles. Last season, Thrasher, Koenders, junior Morgan Phillips, the two-time reigning NCAA smallbore champion, and classmate Milica Babic combined for 12 All-America honors.
Thrasher paced the Mountaineers last season with averages of 586 in smallbore and 596.6 in air rifle. She swept the GARC individual titles.
Freshman Jared Eddy is the lone newcomer for WVU.
Ranked No. 14 in the College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Preseason Rankings, the Zips return 14 from last year's team. Akron finished eighth at the GARC Championships with a 4637 total.
