MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - There were some special guests at tonight's WVU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee meeting at the WVU Coliseum.
Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby was in town to participate in a question-and-answer session with West Virginia University's student athletic leaders.
WVU president E. Gordon Gee and WVU director of athletics Shane Lyons were also on hand to take questions.
Bowlsby regularly travels to conference campuses throughout the year to help keep his fingers on the pulse of current issues and topics. His presence Thursday also gave WVU's student athletic leaders some valuable insight on how a Power 5 athletic conference is managed and operated.
"This is a way for our student-athletes to get a better understanding of how the Big 12 is structured and discuss some of the current trends and issues regarding intercollegiate athletics," Tangela Cheatham, director of student-athlete enhancement, explained.
Cheatham serves as the athletic department's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) coordinator.
A variety of topics were discussed on Thursday, including student-athlete mental health issues.
"Our student-athlete advisory committee decided their focus for the entire year is going to be mental health and last summer our SAAC co-presidents, Erin Slinde from volleyball and Jake Williams from men's swimming and diving, went down to Dallas where they participated in a detailed discussion on mental health," Cheatham said.
The athletic department is recognizing Mental Health Awareness Week Sept. 28 through Oct. 6, with teams wearing wristbands during home athletic events to help promote mental health awareness.
Sporting events recognizing Mental Health Awareness week include Friday's women's soccer match against Kansas State, men's soccer's game against Binghamton on Tuesday, Oct. 2, and football's noon homecoming matchup against Kansas on Saturday, Oct. 6.
WVU's One Team initiative (#WVUOneTeam) and the department's annual canned food drive were also on SAAC's Thursday night agenda.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee consists of approximately 30 team leaders in all sports and meets every three weeks to discuss current issues and topics.
