MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team held its first official 2019 preseason practice on Friday, Sept. 21, at Cary Gym.
Joined by supporters as part of the Mountaineer Athletic Club's Donor Days Celebration, the Mountaineers conducted their skills tests and begin preparations for a successful 2019 season.
"The coaching staff thought Friday's practice was outstanding," Mountaineer coach Jason Butts said. "From a skills standpoint, I don't think we've ever had a team that was this ready to go. We are still working on our presentation, but the level of skill and preparation is there, and we have tremendous talent on this year's team. This squad can reach the goals we've set for them, and we need to keep this ball rolling.
"The energy Friday afternoon inside Cary Gym was incredible. It's usually a stressful day, but everyone handled the tasks at hand wonderfully. I'm excited to keep climbing with this team."
Eleven Mountaineers return for WVU this season, including senior All-American Kirah Koshinski and classmates Carly Galpin and Jaquie Tun. Additionally, six freshmen join WVU this season: Esperanza Abarca, Mackenzie Black, Kendra Combs, Rachel Hornung, Kristin Lang and Taylor Sell.
Entering his eighth season as the Mountaineers' head coach, Butts is joined by 11th year associate head coach Travis Doak and first-year assistant coach Kaylyn Millick. Millick previously served in the same role from 2015-17.
The 2019 WVU gymnastics schedule is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
