MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Nine members of the West Virginia University rowing team earned awards at the team's annual banquet on Sunday, May 6, at the Erickson Alumni Center.
"We're fortunate to have time at the end of the semester to celebrate our seniors and team award winners," head coach Jimmy King said. "Recognizing their contributions and accomplishments to our team is very important. Whether they realize it or not, their day-to-day actions have impacted our team through the course of the year. Thank you and congratulations to all!"
For the first time in the award's history, the Flame Award was given to two varsity squad members, juniors Kaitlin Sullivan and Carly Ledbetter. The award was also given to junior Abigail Patrick of the novice squad. The Flame Award, which is given to the novice and varsity athletes whose teammates have recognized their personality and contributions to the team. It represents the flame as a symbol of Mountaineer spirit. These athletes lift up their teammates during tough practices, work behind the scenes to make sure that races run smoothly and go out of their way to show true Mountaineer Spirit.
Junior Elizabeth Young was honored with the Hammer Award, while freshman Jelena Veskov earned the award for the novice squad. The Hammer Award is presented to the novice and varsity athletes with the fastest 2k erg scores for the year. It recognizes the importance of power for speed in the sport of rowing.
Freshman Laura Simmons of the novice squad and sophomore Alissa Johnson were recognized as the Most Improved Rowers of the Year. This is awarded to the novice and varsity athletes whose teammates have recognized them as having made the biggest improvements in their rowing performance through the year. These improvements are accomplished through hard work on the erg, water and in the weight room.
Finally, freshman Madelynne Jones of the novice squad and sophomore coxswain Gabrielle Boylan were named the Most Valuable Players of their respective squads. The MVP award is given to the novice and varsity student-athletes whose teammates have recognized their contributions as being essential to the success of the team. It considers off- and on-water performances as well as leadership and focusing on how those contribute to racing on the water.
The banquet concluded on Sunday by recognizing the squads four seniors. Aria Asselta (Marketing), Abbigail Rees (psychology), Jacqueline Spiropoulos (sociology and anthropology) and Lillian Westerman (communications) were honored on Sunday afternoon, as they will miss graduation to compete in the 2018 Big 12 Championship this weekend.
The Mountaineers return to the water May 12-13, to compete at the 2018 Big 12 Championship on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
