
WVU Closes Regular Season at Indiana, Penn State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team closes the 2018 outdoor regular season by traveling to a pair of meets on Friday, May 4.

Redshirt senior Amy Cashin and redshirt sophomore Candace Jones are set to compete at the Billy Hayes Invitational, in Bloomington, Indiana, while Mountaineer pole vaulters will participate at the Jim Thorpe Open, in University Park, Pennsylvania.
Competition at Indiana's Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex is set for 4 p.m. ET. The pole vault event at Penn State is set to begin at 2 p.m. ET at the Nittany Lion Outdoor Track.
The Mountaineers last competed at both meets in 2016.
Last time out, WVU combined to earn seven top-five finishes at the Virginia Grand Prix, in Charlottesville, Virginia, on April 28, including two victories. Cashin won the women's 1,500 meters in a time of 4:21.56, while freshman Ellie Gardner won the women's pole vault (unseeded) with a mark of 3.81 meters (12 feet, 6 inches).
Cashin also won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2018 Penn Relays, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 26. The Werribee, Victoria, Australia, native registered a school-record time of 9:59.40 in the victory, becoming the first Mountaineer to break the 10-minute barrier in the event. Cashin took down her previous WVU-best time of 10:01.19 from 2017 and earned the fourth-fastest time in Penn Relays history.
Following her performances, Cashin was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday and Big 12 Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.
Additionally, Jones finished in third place in the 1,500 meters (4:26.17) at the Virginia Grand Prix last week, while junior Faith Penny tied for third place in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.63 meters (5 feet, 4.25 inches). Redshirt junior Madelin Gardner took fourth in the women's pole vault invitational with a jump of 4.05 meters (13 feet, 3.5 inches).
Junior Danique Bryan earned a pair of fifth-place finishes last week, earning a mark of 6.16 meters (20 feet, 2.5 inches) in the women's long jump and 12.52 meters (41 feet, 1 inch) in the women's triple jump.
Eight Mountaineers are featured in this week's United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regional index, including four who lead the Mid-Atlantic Region in their respective events. Cashin tops the region in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while redshirt senior Maggie Drazba owns the top time in the 10,000 meters. Gardner and Bryan also hold the region's No. 1 spot in the pole vault and triple jump, respectively.
As a team, WVU is slotted sixth in this week's regional rankings.
WVU opens the postseason with the 2018 Big 12 Outdoor Championship, from May 11-13, in Waco, Texas.
