Inman Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following his power surge in last weekend's series win against UNLV, sophomore first baseman Marques Inman of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

Inman swung a hot bat to lead the Mountaineers in their three-game series against UNLV. The Elyria, Ohio, native hit .750 with a 1.875 slugging percentage and .833 on-base percentage with six hits in eight at-bats, including a home run in every game. He drove in five runs, scored five runs and added three walks, 15 total bases and was hit by a pitch once. On the week, Inman led the Big 12 Conference with a .667 batting average, nearly .100 points higher than the next-highest in the league, had a Big 12-best three home runs and 15 total bases, tied for third with five runs scored and tied for fourth with five RBIs.

Inman and the Mountaineers are set to take on Penn State at PNC Park in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night, before they return home to host rival Pitt on Wednesday and Big 12 foe Oklahoma State in a conference series Friday-Sunday.

Last Week in Baseball: West Virginia went 3-1 last week, with a win over Niagara before a series win against UNLV … WVU rallied with a go-ahead, four-run sixth inning to beat Niagara 9-6 on April 3, as relievers Braden Zarbnisky, Sam Kessler and Shane Ennis pitched the final 7.0 innings and held NU to one run on three hits … Kessler earned his first win of the season and Ennis picked up the save … West Virginia lost the opener to UNLV, 11-4, in the first game of a doubleheader on April 6 … WVU rallied for a walk-off win in the second game of the doubleheader, 8-7, as the Mountaineers erased a 7-1 deficit with a run in the sixth and five in the eighth … Kyle Gray hit a walk-off single with two outs in the ninth inning as the bullpen held UNLV hitless in the final 4.0 innings … Ennis earned the win and improved to 4-2 in 2018 … Marques Inman homered for the third consecutive game as WVU won the series vs. UNLV with a 7-5 victory on April 8 … the top four hitters in the West Virginia lineup combined for 10 of WVU's 13 hits, five RBIs and six runs scored … Zarbnisky earned the win, improving to 2-1, while adding a team-high three hits and three runs scored at the plate … Ennis earned the save, his second of the week and third of the season … in the three-game series, Inman hit .750 with six hits, five RBIs, five runs scored, a 1.875 slugging percentage and three walks … the Niagara game was scheduled after inclement weather forced WVU's game at Penn State on April 3 to be postponed.

Notes: West Virginia (13-15, 1-5 Big 12) played all four games at home this week, which begins a stretch where 15 of the next 18 games are at home after beginning the year with 21 of the first 24 games on the road … WVU owns the No. 1 strength of schedule in the country, according to WarrenNolen.com, and is No. 23 in the NCAA RPI after a series win against then-No. 28 UNLV … West Virginia returns to PNC Park on Tuesday to play Penn State after beating the Nittany Lions there last year, 4-2 … the trip to the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates is the Mountaineers' third visit to an MLB facility in as many years, after playing an exhibition game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at their Spring Training ballpark in 2016 and last year's inaugural college baseball game at PNC Park … WVU's walk-off win on Friday vs. UNLV was its second in its first five games at home … West Virginia is 106-88 all-time vs. Pitt, the Mountaineers' most-played and oldest rivalry … WVU has won three in a row in the series and eight of the last 11 … Oklahoma State holds a 13-7 lead in the all-time series, though West Virginia has won each of the last two season series, 2-1 at home in 2016 and 2-1 in Stillwater last year.

This Week in Gymnastics: The Mountaineers (13-13, 0-6) have concluded the 2018 season.

Last Week in Gymnastics: WVU scored 194.4. and finished sixth at the 2018 NCAA University Park Regional Championships … seeded fourth, the Mountaineers' best showing came in the fifth rotation on floor exercise, as the team scored 49.0, the third-best showing of the meet … WVU also tallied marks of 48.75 on vault, 48.45 on uneven bars and 48.2 on balance beam … senior Zaakira Muhammad earned WVU's top individual mark, a third place, career-best matching 9.9 on vault … sophomore Abby Kaufman finished a team-best seventh on floor with a career-best matching 9.85 score, the third-highest mark awarded … junior Carly Galpin finished 13th on balance beam with a 9.8, and classmate Jaquie Tun paced WVU on uneven bars with a 9.75, good enough for 21st overall … Muhammad finished 11th in the all-around with a 38.65 mark.

Notes: Saturday was the final career meet for three Mountaineer seniors – Muhammad, Robyn Bernard and Jordan Gillette … No. 5-ranked Florida (197.725) and No. 8 Washington (196.275) finished first and second, respectively, and earned the region's bids to the 2018 NCAA National Championships … WVU counted a fall at a meet for the first time in 2018 … following the meet, WVU Associate Athletic Director/Facilities & Operations and team administrator April Messerly was named the NCAA Southeast Region co-Administrator of the Year.

This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers return to action by competing in Bucknell University's Bison Outdoor Classic, from April 14-15, in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

Notes: The Mountaineers are set to compete at Bucknell for the third consecutive year … WVU collected four wins at the meet last season: Danique Bryan in the women's long jump (6.28 meters), Shamoya McNeil in the women's triple jump (13.01 meters), Madelin Gardner in the women's pole vault (4.00 meters) and Marseille McBeam in the women's high jump (1.70 meters) … Bryan's performance in the long jump was a career best and ranks No. 4 all-time in program history … the Mountaineers finished fifth out of 20 teams at Bucknell last season … WVU last competed at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, North Carolina, and the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, California, earning a combined eight top-10 finishes.

This Week in Tennis: West Virginia will hit the road for a two-match road swing through the Lone Star State, as it takes on Baylor on Friday, April 13, and Texas on Sunday, April 15 … Friday's match is slated for 6 p.m. ET, while first serve for Sunday's contest is set for 2:30 p.m. ET.

Last Week in Tennis: West Virginia (7-9, 1-4 Big 12) dropped a pair of matches against ranked conference opponents, falling to No. 36 Kansas State, 4-1, on Friday, and No. 16 Kansas, 4-0, on Sunday … on Friday, the Mountaineers jumped out to a fast start, taking the doubles point from the Wildcats, but Kansas State won four of the first five singles matches to win the contest … after taking the doubles point, No. 16 Kansas powered past WVU in singles play to win the match, 4-0.

Notes: Senior Lyn Yuen Choo and freshman Giovanna Caputo lead the Mountaineers in singles play with eight wins apiece … the doubles pair of Choo and Paula Goetz pace the Mountaineers with eight wins in doubles action.

This Week in Golf: WVU heads to rival Penn State this weekend … the Mountaineers will take part in the Rutherford Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday at the Penn State Blue Golf Course in State College, Pennsylvania.

Last Week in Golf: Led by Mark Goetz, WVU finished sixth at the Cabarrus County Irish Creek Collegiate in Kannapolis, North Carolina, last weekend … WVU posted a three-round team score of 290-298-290=878 for 26 over par … the Mountaineers' score of 290 in the third round was the second-best of the day … Goetz shot 71-70-73=214 to finish in fourth place at one over par … playing as an individual, freshman Logan Perkins finished tied for eighth, shooting three over par with a 69-73-74=216 for a new career low … No. 15 Clemson took home top team honors at seven over with an 859, while No. 29 North Florida was the runner-up at nine over with a score of 861 … No. 4 Georgia Tech took third at 15 over (867), and Big 12 foe Kansas was fourth at 22 over (874) … junior Max Sear also finished in the top 25 with a score of 74-76-70=220 for 24th place.

Notes: Goetz's fourth-place finish was his second top-5 finish of the season … he previously tied for third at Martin Downs in February … Sear continues to lead the team with a 72.64 scoring average … Etienne Papineau is second on the team with an average of 73.25, followed closely by Matthew Sharpstene at 73.32 … Perkins tied for second at Irish Creek with 11 birdies … Sear leads the team in birdies (104) and is tied with Tristan Nicholls for the team lead with three eagles … Papineau is averaging a team-best 73.10 in his final round of play.

This Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers are off this week … WVU returns to the water on Sunday, April 22, for the George Mason Invitational.

Last Week in Rowing: West Virginia faced adverse weather conditions as it continued its spring season by competing against Oklahoma and Texas in the second annual Big 12 Double Duals at Lakewood Park in Norfolk, Virginia, on Saturday … in the morning session of racing, three-time defending Big 12 champion Texas won all five races over the Mountaineers … with the weather conditions worsening, WVU faced Oklahoma in the second session … the Sooners topped West Virginia in the first varsity eight and second varsity eight races before the duals were called due to weather.
