Goetz Leads WVU at Irish Creek

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman Mark Goetz shot one under to sit in the top five of the leaderboard, pacing the West Virginia golf team after two rounds at the Cabarrus County Irish Creek Collegiate in Kannapolis, North Carolina, on Saturday.
WVU is currently in seventh place at 20-over par. The Mountaineers carded team scores of 290-298=688 and are 23 strokes back from the leader, No. 15 Clemson. The Tigers are three under par with a 565, while No. 4 Georgia Tech is in second at six over with a score of 574. UNCG rounds out the top three with a 577 for nine-over par.
Goetz balanced a bogey with a birdie to shoot even par with a first-round score of 71 He followed that up with four birdies and three bogeys for a one-under-par score of 70. Goetz is in fifth place overall with a score of 141 for one under.
"There were really, really tough conditions today," coach Sean Covich said. "I'm proud of the way the guys battled. Mark Goetz stepped up for us big time today; that was impressive to see. It's going to be a cold day tomorrow, but hopefully, we can finish this tournament off with a solid round."
Fellow freshman Logan Perkins was a late addition to the field as an individual and is also in the top 10 after 36 holes, sitting tied for sixth at even par. He totaled eight birdies across the two rounds, shooting 69-73=142.
A third freshman in Matthew Sharpstene moved five spots and into 27th place in the second round. His scorecard showed 73-74=147 for five over on the day.
Sophomore Etienne Papineau and junior Max Sear are tied for 40th place at eight over with matching scores of 150. Papineau carded a pair of early birdies in the first round, but registered three straight bogeys at the turn to shoot one-over with a 72 in the first. However, he struggled in the second and finished seven-over par with a 78. Sear used four birdies on the front nine for 73 at two-over in the first round, but shot five over in the second with a 76.
Junior Tristan Nicholls rounded out the group with a score of 76-78=154. He is tied for 66th at 12-over-par.
The Mountaineers are paired with James Madison, VCU and Big 12 foe Kansas for the third and final round, which begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday.
