Box Score Morgantown, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's tennis team started strong by taking the doubles point, but eventually fell to No. 35 Kansas State, 4-1, Friday afternoon, at the Summit Tennis Academy, in Morgantown.
 
With all three doubles matches in the tiebreaker at one time, WVU (7-7, 1-2 Big 12) claimed the doubles point to take the early 1-0 advantage. On the first court, Christina Jordan and Sofía Duran earned the victory after besting Carolina Costamagna and Margot Decker, 7-6 (3). On the third court, the freshmen tandem of Anne-Sophie Courteau and Giovanna Caputo fell behind early in the tiebreak and were unable to get ahead as they fell, 6-7 (5).
 
With the doubles point hanging in the balance and the match score set at six-all, Lyn Yuen Choo and Paula Goetz led by a single point through most of the tiebreak. With the match knotted at seven apiece, the duo powered past Maria Linares and Anna Turco in dramatic fashion to win the match, 7-6 (7).
 
"The battle that we found ourselves in and doubles with three tiebreaks and we were able to pull two of those out in the end," fifth-year coach Miha Lisac said. "That was a very good point for us in the match."
 
Then, the Mountaineers dropped the first four singles matches, giving the Wildcats the 4-1 victory. At the No. 1 slot, Jordan fell to KSU's Decker, 6-1 and 6-2, to tie the match at 1-1. KSU's Linares defeated Courteau, 6-4, in straight sets, at No. 2. Duran fell to Turco, 6-4 and 6-2, as Kansas State took a commanding 3-1 lead. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Goetz stormed back to take the second set, 6-2. In the third set, Goetz could not hold on as she fell, 6-4, to clinch the match for the Wildcats.
 
The match between Choo and Costamagna was abandoned in the third set at No. 3 and Caputo's match was abandoned at No. 6.   
 
"I'll give them credit," Lisac said. "They bounced back and came out in singles and didn't let us winning doubles affect them."

West Virginia will resume its homestand on Sunday as the Mountaineers take on No. 16 Kansas at the Summit Tennis Academy. First serve for the match is slated to begin at noon. Free pizza and WVU tennis posters will be available to all fans attending the match on Sunday. Fans also are encouraged to stay after the match for an autograph signing with the team.
