WVU Welcomes Pair of Ranked Big 12 Foes

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After a brief one-match road trip, the West Virginia University tennis team returns to Morgantown to face No. 35 Kansas State on Friday, April 6, and No. 16 Kansas on Sunday, April 8. Both matches will take place at the Summit Tennis Academy.
"We are returning to Big 12 play this weekend at home against Kansas State and Kansas," fifth-year coach Miha Lisac said. "It will be an exciting weekend of competition and a great opportunity for us to challenge ourselves."
Friday's match against Kansas State is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. ET. The Wildcats enter the match with a 12-5 mark on the season, including a 2-2 record in Big 12 play. Last weekend, K-State split a pair of matches in a road swing through Texas, defeating TCU (4-3) and falling to Texas Tech (4-0).
Maria Linares and Ines Mesquita top the Wildcats in singles wins, each recording 10 apiece. The tandem of Carolina Costamagna and Margot Decker have a 10-4 mark at the No. 1 doubles position to lead Kansas State.
Free pizza and WVU Tennis posters will be available to all fans attending the match on Friday. Fans also are encouraged to stay after the match for an autograph signing with the team.
On Sunday, WVU will take on No. 16 Kansas with first serve set for Noon ET. All fans in attendance will be able to get free pizza and WVU tennis posters. Fans can follow the action from home at WVUlivestats.com.
Kansas begins the weekend with an 11-4 record after defeating No. 16 Texas Tech (4-0) and TCU (4-1) last weekend to move to 3-1 in the Big 12. Three Jayhawks, Anastasia Rychagova (No. 7), Despoina Vogasari (No. 66) and Nina Khmelnitckaia (No. 116), are ranked in the latest Oracle/ITA singles rankings, released on April 3. Khmelnitckaia and Rychagova place at No. 14 in the Oracle/ITA doubles rankings, while the duo of Khmelnitckaia and Tatiana Nikolaeva are ranked 83rd.
"We would love for everyone to come out and offer us a little extra boost with your support as we take on our conference rivals," Lisac continued.
Senior Lyn Yuen Choo and freshman Giovanna Caputo pace the Mountaineers with eight singles wins apiece. Choo also boasts a three-match winning streak, with her last loss coming back on March 10. The doubles pair of Choo and Paula Goetz lead WVU with eight wins in doubles action, including a three-match winning streak.
