Mountaineers Send Three to Penn Relays

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three members of the West Virginia University track and field team travel to the 2018 Penn Relays, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, April 26.

Redshirt seniors Amy Cashin and Maggie Drazba and redshirt freshman Sarah Wills will represent the Mountaineers at Penn's Franklin Field. Collegiate competition is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. ET.
"It's a very difficult time of the year with final exams and graduation, so what we've done is try our best to keep kids in school as long as they can this week but still not sacrifice great competition for them," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "For the ladies racing tomorrow night, it will be a return trip for some, and they'll get to experience it one more time. We're trying to do the best we can to get everyone through the weekend by looking at academics and athletics combined."

WVU last competed at the Penn Relays in 2016. The event, which is the oldest track and field competition in the country, has been hosted by Penn every year since 1895. The meet also is one of the biggest in the United States, with over 200 colleges set to participate this season.
The Mountaineers last competed at the Virginia Challenge, from April 20-21, in Charlottesville, Virginia. WVU combined to earn 11 top-10 finishes at the two-day meet, including Cashin's second-place finish in the women's 1,500 meters invitational (4:20.29). Wills also earned a runner-up performance in the women's 1,500 (unseeded) with a time of 4:32.71.
Additionally, redshirt junior Madelin Gardner broke her own outdoor school record in the women's pole vault invitational, jumping 4.41 meters (14 feet, 5.50 inches) in a second-place finish. Gardner topped her previous WVU-best mark of 4.13 meters, which she set at the 2017 Virginia Challenge.
The Penn Relays is one of two meets the Mountaineers will compete in this week. WVU also is set to make a return trip to Charlottesville to compete in the Virginia Grand Prix on Saturday, April 28.
