Wolf Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following his performance in a 1-0 win over No. 7 Texas Tech on Thursday, freshman left-handed pitcher Jackson Wolf of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

Wolf came on in relief on Thursday night against the Red Raiders, pitching four scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. The Gahanna, Ohio, native struck out three and earned his first career win. The victory was the Mountaineers' first over a ranked opponent this season. The result also was the first home loss for Texas Tech in 2018, and the first time the Red Raiders were shutout at home since 2015.

Wolf is 1-0 with a 2.79 earned-run average this season. He has allowed three earned runs on four hits in 9.2 innings. The 6-foot-7 lefty has eight strikeouts on the year. He will be making his first career start for the Mountaineers on Tuesday at Penn State.

This Week in Women's Basketball: WVU has concluded the 2017-18 season.

Last Week in Women's Basketball: The Mountaineers (25-12) fell to Virginia Tech in the WNIT Semifinals on Wednesday at the WVU Coliseum … senior forward Teana Muldrow had 20 points and tied her career high with six blocks in her final game in the Gold and Blue … senior guard Chania Ray just missed a double-double with nine points and nine assists in her final contest … senior forward Kristina King capped her career with 12 rebounds and seven assists in the loss.

Notes: Muldrow departs WVU ranked in the all-time top five in career scoring, rebounding, field goals made, total rebounds, offensive rebounds, blocked shots, personal fouls and double-doubles … she is the all-time leader in games played … Muldrow also ranks in the all-time top 10 in field goals attempted, 3-point field goals attempted, 3-point field goal percentage, rebounding average and minutes played … Ray leaves the program ranking in the all-time top-10 for career assists and all-time top-five in assists per game … junior guard Katrina Pardee enters the all-time top 10 in career 3-point field goals made and 3-point field goals attempted as she completes her junior season.

This Week in Gymnastics: Seeded fourth, the Mountaineers will compete at the 2018 NCAA University Park Regional Championships on Saturday, April 7, at 4 p.m. ET, inside Penn State's Rec Hall in University Park, Pennsylvania … WVU will compete against No. 5-ranked Florida, No. 8 Washington, No. 17 Arizona State, PSU and New Hampshire.

Last Week in Gymnastics: WVU (13-13, 0-6) did not compete last week.

Notes: The Mountaineers' regional seed is its highest since 2009 … WVU will open the meet on a bye before uneven bars … the team's complete rotation order is: bye, bars, beam, bye, floor, vault … the top two teams, as well as the top two all-arounders not on an advancing team and any event winners also not on an advancing team, will move on to the 2018 NCAA National Championships, set for April 20-21, in St. Louis, Missouri … junior Kirah Koshinski was named an NACGC/W All-America Second Team honoree on vault on March 28 … the regular-season award is her third straight … she is the second gymnast in program history to earn at least one All-America honor in three consecutive years.

This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers are off this week … the team will be back in action at Bucknell University's Bison Outdoor Classic, from April 14-15.

Last Week in Track and Field: WVU competed at a pair of meets, from March 30-31, earning a total of eight top-10 finishes at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, North Carolina, as well as multiple personal-best times at the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, California … on Friday, redshirt freshman Kyrielle Williams placed third in the women's high jump (1.65 meters – 5 feet, 5 inches), while redshirt senior Meghan Jean-Baptiste took fifth place in the women's 100-meter hurdles (14.53) and 10th place in the high jump (1.60 meters – 5 feet, 3 inches) … junior Faith Penny made her 2017-18 season debut in a seventh-place finish in the women's high jump invitational (1.65 meters – 5 feet, 5 inches) … the Mountaineers earned four more top-10 finishes in Raleigh on Saturday, including freshman Ellie Gardner's third-place finish in the women's pole vault (3.50 meters – 11 feet, 5.65 inches), senior Sara Finfrock's sixth-place mark in the women's pole vault invitational (3.80 meters – 12 feet, 5.50 inches), freshman McKenna Smith's ninth-place finish in the women's 200 meters (24.76) and WVU's 4x1,500-meter relay's 10th-place finish in 20:33.13 … at Stanford, redshirt senior Maggie Drazba ran a personal-best time of 33:51.71 in the women's 10,000 meters (section 2) on late Friday night to place sixth … redshirt freshman Sarah Wills finished eighth in the women's 5,000 meters (section 4) in a personal-best 17:03.80.

Notes: Drazba's performance in the 10,000 meters fell just short of earning a spot in WVU's all-time top five in the event; all five members of that list went on to become All-Americans … redshirt sophomore Olivia Hill also claimed a personal-best time of 34:47.73 in the 10,000 meters … additionally, Jean-Baptiste's mark in the 100-meter hurdles also was a personal best … the outdoor season's initial USTFCCCA regional rankings are set to be released on Monday afternoon.

This Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers travel to Norfolk, Virginia, for a pair of races this weekend … WVU will begin the weekend at the second annual Big 12 Duals on April 7 … the crew will race against Oklahoma and defending Big 12 champion Texas … the duals are hosted by Big 12 Conference affiliate Old Dominion and will take place at Lakewood Park … on Sunday, the Mountaineers will conclude the weekend with an exhibition against Old Dominion at Lakewood Park.

Last Week in Rowing: West Virginia was off last week.

Notes: The weekend's Big 12 Duals will pit the Mountaineers against Texas and Oklahoma, the two most prestigious programs in the conference … either Texas or Oklahoma has won the Big 12 Championship every year, with Texas taking seven of the nine conference titles … last season, the Mountaineers competed against Big 12 conference affiliates Alabama and Tennessee.

This Week in Tennis: West Virginia will be back in action next weekend as it hosts a pair of Big 12 Conference foes … the Mountaineers take on Kansas State on Friday, April 6, beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET … WVU concludes its homestand against Kansas on April 8 at noon … should inclement weather effect the area, both matches will take place at the Summit Tennis Academy, otherwise, the matches will take place at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts located next to the WVU Coliseum.

Last Week in Tennis: West Virginia (7-7, 1-2 Big 12) dropped in-state rival Marshall, 4-3, in the 40th meeting between the two programs on Saturday at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center in Huntington, West Virginia … after taking the doubles point and the first two out of three singles matches and leading 3-1, Marshall stormed back to tie the match at three apiece … with the matched notched at 3-3, freshman Anne-Sophie Courteau bested Marshall's Maddie Silver, 6-0, 6-7 (3), and 6-4 to clinch the match for the Mountaineers.

Notes: With the win, WVU now holds a 23-17 advantage over Marshall … with a win at Marshall, Lyn Yuen Choo tied Giovanna Caputo for the tied lead with eight wins in singles play … the doubles pair of Choo and Paula Goetz pace the Mountaineers with eight wins in doubles action.

This Week in Golf: WVU heads to Kannapolis, North Carolina, for the Irish Creek Collegiate on Saturday and Sunday … the two-day, 54-hole event will be hosted by Charlotte at The Club at Irish Creek … in addition to the Mountaineers and the 49ers, the field also will include: Davidson, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Kansas, Indiana, Middle Tennessee, North Florida, James Madison, Dartmouth, VCU and UNCG.

Notes: Max Sear continues to lead the team with a scoring average of 72.56 … Papineau ranks second at 73.16, while Sharpstene boasts a stroke average of 73.24 … with his sixth-place finish at Furman, Sear now has four top-10 finishes in eight tournaments this year as well as six top-20 finishes … Papineau's third-place finish was his second best of the season, as he previously tied for runner-up at the 2017 Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational in October … he has three top-20 finishes on his resume this season.

This Week in Baseball: This week, WVU travels to Penn State on Tuesday, April 10, for a 6:30 p.m. ET matchup on the Big Ten Network … the Mountaineers return home for a weekend series against No. 23 UNLV from April 6-8 … the series at Monongalia County Ballpark begins on Friday, April 6, at 6:30 p.m. … Saturday's contest is at 4 p.m., while first pitch of Sunday's finale is at 1 p.m. … tickets are available for all three games vs. UNLV at WVUGAME.com, by calling 1-800-WVU GAME, at the Mountaineer Ticket Office at the WVU Coliseum or on game day at Monongalia County Ballpark … several promotions are planned for this weekend, beginning with Friday Night Happy Hour on Friday, where half-off beverages are available from 5:30-6:30, and all fans can play Baseball Bingo … on Saturday, fans can watch the WVU football spring game, at 1 p.m., and the baseball game, at 4 p.m., with a special combo ticket for just $15 … April 7 also is Family Day, where fans can purchase four tickets and receive a $10 concession voucher for just $25 … the series concludes on April 8 at 1 p.m., with the first Kids Day of the year, which features a new Kids Zone Presented By WVU Medicine Children's with inflatables and Mr. Twister's Balloon Art and Face Painting … additionally, kids also can run the bases after the game.

Last Week in Baseball: Last week, West Virginia continued Big 12 play on the road with a series at No. 7 Texas Tech … the Mountaineers upset TTU in the opener, 1-0 on March 29, handing the Red Raiders their first home loss in 14 games this season … Isaiah Kearns, Jackson Wolf and Shane Ennis combined to hold the Big 12's best offense to just five hits … Darius Hill drove in WVU's lone run with a sixth-inning single that came two pitches after Ivan Gonzalez doubled for West Virginia's first hit of the game … Wolf picked up his first career win and Ennis earned the first save of his career … Texas Tech evened the series the following day, with a 4-1 win, as WVU again was no-hit into the sixth inning … West Virginia pitching held TTU, the No. 1 RPI team in the country, to four runs on six hits, while the WVU bullpen did not allow a hit in 5.0 innings … the Mountaineers rallied with two ninth-inning runs and brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the series finale on March 30, but the Red Raiders won, 8-5 … WVU took a 3-1 lead in the fifth, but TTU responded with seven runs in the next two innings before West Virginia's ninth-inning rally … Kearns, who came off the bench, led WVU with a career-high-tying two hits and one RBI … the Mountaineers' week began with rain postponing Tuesday's Backyard Brawl home game vs. Pitt to Wednesday, April 11, at 6 p.m. ET.

Notes: West Virginia (10-14, 1-5 Big 12) played a ranked team for the first time this year when it traveled to No. 7 Texas Tech, where WVU went 1-2 … the upset win in Lubbock on Thursday was WVU's third win in a row against TTU, while the Mountaineers had won five of seven in the series before the Red Raiders took the final two games … West Virginia's 1-0 shutout win gave Texas Tech its first loss of the year at home, and it was TTU's first time getting shut out at home since 2015 … Wolf earned his first career win and Ennis earned his first career save … Hill had his first game-winning RBI of the year … West Virginia's pitching staff held Texas Tech, which is averaging nearly nine runs per game this season, to a total of 12 runs in the three-game series.
