
Duo Earns World Championship Bids

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Sophomore Morgan Phillips and freshman Sarah Osborn of the West Virginia University rifle team earned a pair of podium finishes at the 2018 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships for Rifle and Pistol at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Phillips, a native of Salisbury, Maryland, finished first in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions with a final total of 2333. The two-time reigning NCAA smallbore champion shot 1170 on the first day of competition and 1155 on the second day, giving her a match total of 2325, 12-shots better than second place. Phillips shot a winning 453.6 in the final on April 16, earning eight additional points and bringing her final score to 2333.
Osborn, a Hampton, Virginia, native, placed second in the women's 10m air rifle with a 1246.5 total. She finished with daily marks of 622.2 and 622.3 and placed fifth in the final on April 18 with a 183.4 mark, earning two additional points.
By virtue of their finishes, the duo has qualified for the United States Junior National Team and has earned the right to compete in their respective events at the 52nd ISSF Junior World Championship in Changwon, Korea, Aug. 31 – Sept. 15.
The pair each qualified in both finals at the championships, with Osborn just missing the podium in 3 positions, as she finished fourth with a 2308 total. Osborn shot 1144 on day one and 1162 on day two for a two-day total of 2306. She finished seventh in the final with a 393.4 mark and earned two additional points.
Phillips finished seventh in air rifle with a 1238.4 mark, shooting 620.6 on the first day of competition and 616.8 on the second day for a match total of 1237.4. She earned one additional point for a seventh place, 141.4 showing in the final.
Last year, Phillips placed fourth in the junior women's 50m rifle 3 positions at the 2017 ISSF Junior World Championship.
