MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Max Sear and the West Virginia golf team sit in third place after two rounds of play at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, hosted by Penn State at the Penn State Blue Golf Course in State College on Saturday.
"We left a few shots out there during the second round, but overall, it was a solid effort," coach Sean Covich said. "Max Sear played really well all day and Etienne Papineau was really solid as well. Once again, we're expecting much colder temperatures and rain tomorrow, so we will have to embrace the conditions and finish strong."
After shooting four under with a team score of 280 in the first round, the Mountaineers shot 287 in the second to finish the day one-under par with a two-round total of 567. Host Penn State leads the way at 12 under with a score of 556, while Oakland is second at four under with a 564.
Sear enters the third and final round of play in third place. He carded a 67 in the first round to sit second at four-under par, and shot one under in the second round with a 70 for a 36-hole total of 137 at five-under par. He is two strokes back from the lead.
Sophomore Etienne Papineau shot 69-71=140 to end the day at two-under par. He is tied for seventh place.
Freshman Matthew Sharpstene also shot two under with a 69 in the first round. However, he finished four over in the second with a 75. He is two over par at 144 and tied for 21st place. Classmate Mark Goetz is two strokes back from Sharpstene at four-over par. He shot 75-71=146 and is just outside the top-25, tied for 26th place.
Playing as an individual, senior Avery Schneider's scorecard showed 75-73=148. He is in 38th place at six-over par.
Freshman Logan Perkins shot 77-76=153 for 11 over par. He is tied for 61st place.
West Virginia is paired with Oakland and Penn State for the third and final round of play on Sunday. The Mountaineers will hit the links in tee times starting at 9:30 a.m.
