MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A pair of Mountaineers will represent the West Virginia University rifle team at the 2018 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships for Rifle and Pistol.
Sophomore Morgan Phillips and freshman Sarah Osborn reported for check-in today at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Competition begins this weekend, with the smallbore qualifications set for April 14-15. The smallbore final will take place April 16. Air rifle qualification begins Tuesday, April 17, and the finals will take place on April 18.
The top-three finishers in each event will qualify for the Junior National Team, which will represent the United States at the 52nd ISSF Junior World Championship in Changwon, Korea, Aug. 31 – Sept. 15.
"The National Junior Olympic Championships is one of the biggest junior matches of the year," Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. "The nation's top athletes will be at this match, and Morgan and Sarah will face great competition. This year's match carries even more meaning, as World Championship bids are on the line. Morgan shot at last year's World Championships, and I know she is looking forward to earning a second qualification. Both Morgan and Sarah will look to shoot their best this week."
Last year, Phillips, the two-time reigning NCAA smallbore champion, placed fourth in the junior women's 50m rifle 3 positions at the 2017 ISSF Junior World Championships. She also finished third in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions and fifth in the women's 10m air rifle at the 2017 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships.
