Blue & Golden Globes Fun
April 10, 2018 02:52 PM | General
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Success in the classroom and in the competition venue was celebrated Monday evening, as West Virginia University student-athletes and athletic department staff came together for the annual Blue and Golden Globe Awards, held April 9 at the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place.
Academic success highlighted the evening's festivities, as 260 Mountaineers were acknowledged for grade point averages (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2017 spring and fall semesters. Standout athletic moments, as well as excellence in the community, also were recognized.
"The Blue and Golden Globe Awards is an annual event the Mountaineers look forward to each year," WVU Director of NCAA Life Skills Programming Tangela Cheatham said. "We believe it's important to honor the student-athletes for their hard work in the classroom just as much as we recognize their competitive accomplishments, and this awards banquet allows us to emphasize the student in student-athlete.
"We revamped the awards banquet this year with the hopes of creating a fun evening for the Mountaineers to enjoy with their teammates and their fellow student-athletes. I think everyone enjoyed themselves, especially early in the night, as our Gold Carpet Entrance was a big hit. We look forward to continuing the tradition of the Blue and Golden Globe Awards in future years."
Of the 260 Mountaineers honored for academics, 40 were awarded a gold medal for 4.0 GPAs. Ninety student-athletes boast GPAs of 3.5 - 3.99 and were awarded silver medals, while 130 earned bronze medals for owning GPAs of 3.0 – 3.49. Additionally, the top graduating senior from each Mountaineer program invited his or her most influential professor to the awards banquet.
Senior forward Michaela Abam of the women's soccer team was named Female Athlete of the Year, while senior guard Jevon Carter of the men's basketball team was named Male Athlete of the Year. Carter's teammate, freshman forward Teddy Allen, was named Rookie of the Year, and Bob Huggins was named Coach of the Year.
Senior gymnast Robyn Bernard won the Individual Performance of the Year honor for her near-perfect 9.925 vault at Oklahoma on Feb. 24.
Senior gymnast Jordan Gillette earned the Best Game Face award, and James Bolden (men's basketball) and Abigail Patrick (rowing) were named Male and Female Best Dressed. Bolden and Patrick's awards were chosen via a Twitter Poll conducted at last night's event.
Assistant Equipment Manager Conor McNamara was named the WVU Stafflete for best athletic department staff member.
Men's soccer earned the Game of the Year honor for its 1-0 win over No. 5 Michigan State on Oct. 11, and men's swimming & diving earned the Mountaineer Spirit Award.
Men's basketball again claimed the Team Award for Community Service. Women's swimming & diving finished second, and wrestling placed third.
Rob Dowdy (football) and Lexi Glassmire (women's swimming & diving) earned the individual community service honors.
The rifle team was honored for having the highest team GPA overall for the combined 2017 spring and fall semesters. Tennis boasted the top team GPA for spring 2017, and cross country had the highest GPA for fall 2017.
The golf team claimed the Most Improved Academic Performance for spring 2017, and football earned the honor for fall 2017.
