March 06, 2018 05:47 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the second consecutive day, senior Logan McHenry and junior Julia Calcut of the West Virginia University diving team advanced to event finals at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, in Piscataway, New Jersey, on Tuesday.
Results
McHenry earned a 10th-place finish on men's 1-meter, while Calcut took 10th on women's 3-meter at the Rutgers University Aquatic Center. McHenry tallied a finals score of 301.10 and a combined score of 609.65 on the day. Calcut registered a score of 261.20 in the finals with a combined score of 557.70.
"It was another outstanding day for the divers," WVU diving coach Michael Grapner said. "Logan and Julia had phenomenal prelims. Julia was fourth going into finals and was consistent with each of her dives. She made the corrections and applied her feedback. The final was a mental challenge in trying to maintain the place, while other girls were gunning for those top spots. I'm proud of her and am looking forward to seeing what she will do for us next year.
"Logan had a great day as well. He was eighth out of prelims and needed to hit every dive to make the top six. This meet had some of the most consistent and best quality diving I've seen from Logan all year. He has been such a pleasure to coach, and I'm proud of all of his accomplishments. Logan has come such a long way in his diving career, with overcoming injuries and having some hurdles along the way. I think his last two meets were two of his best. I'm going to miss coaching Logan every day, and I'm thankful for the opportunity to be his coach."
McHenry earned a score of 308.55 during the preliminary round, enough to earn a berth into the finals. Junior Austin Smith was 21st after scoring 271.00 in prelims.
Calcut led the WVU women with a score of 296.50 during prelims, ahead of junior Madelyn Woods, who placed 21st with a prelims score of 247.95. Junior Averly Hobbs was next, finishing in 22nd place with a score of 245.00. Freshman Callie Smith took 32nd place with a prelims score of 224.00.
The top 18 divers advanced to the finals in both events, while the top six from the finals advanced to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
McHenry and Calcut also qualified for Monday's event finals, as McHenry finished eighth on 3-meter, while Calcut took 12th on 1-meter. In all, six Mountaineer divers participated at the NCAA Zones meet this week.
Due to inclement weather in the area, the Mountaineers will return to Morgantown and will not compete in Wednesday's men's and women's platform diving events.
