WVU Faces In-State Rival Marshall
March 30, 2018 02:11 PM | Tennis
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team will travel to the southern part of the state to take on rival Marshall in Huntington, West Virginia on Saturday, March 31.
Saturday's match is slated to begin at noon and will take place at the Huntington Tennis Club. Live stats from Saturday's action can be found here.
The match will mark the 40th time the two teams will meet in a series that goes back to WVU's inaugural season of 1973. The Mountaineers hold a 22-17 advantage over the Thundering Herd.
"Every year that we have played Marshall so far, we have had a battle with them so we don't expect anything different going into this weekend," fifth-year coach Miha Lisac said. "We have seen a lot of their players already. They have one freshman in the lineup, but we have a good idea of who they are team-wise and what to expect from them."
Marshall enters the weekend with a 2-15 record after dropping a pair of matches last weekend. The Thundering Herd fell to UNLV, 5-2, and Denver, 5-2, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Freshman Anna Smith leads Marshall with a 7-6 record in singles play, boasting a five-match winning streak. Smith and Marija Bogicevic pace the Thundering Herd in doubles play with a 7-2 mark at the No. 2 position.
Last weekend, WVU (6-7, 1-2 Big 12) won a pair of matches in Morgantown, including its first Big 12 win in program history. The Mountaineers dropped Duquesne, 4-1, on March 23, before earning a win over Iowa State, 4-2.
Freshman Giovanna Caputo leads the Mountaineers with an 8-3 record in singles play this season, while senior Lyn Yuen Choo sits in second with a 7-3 record. The doubles pair of Choo and junior Paula Goetz pace the Mountaineers with seven wins in doubles action.
