
WVU Trio Caps NCAA Men’s Championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Jake Armstrong, redshirt junior Tristen Di Sibio and freshman David Dixon of the West Virginia University men's swimming and diving team closed competition at the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Saturday.
Results
Dixon finished in 22nd place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:43.02, while Di Sibio claimed 41st place in the 200 breaststroke after touching the wall in 1:57.50. Armstrong also competed in the 200 breaststroke, finishing in 1:58.66 for 46th place.
Dixon moved up five spots from his initial seed time entering the 200 butterfly. Armstrong improved by one spot in his event.
"I'm really proud of these three men," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "They all had good swims this morning, with each having their best prelim times. They've done a great job in the past month and represented WVU and the state very well."
On Friday, Armstrong became the Mountaineers' 15th men's All-American after his 14th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke. The Dover, Ohio, native earned a time of 52.69 in the event's consolation final, earning honorable mention All-America honors.
Di Sibio placed 36th in Friday's 100 breaststroke, finishing in 53.71, while Dixon registered a 41st-place finish in the 400 individual medley (3:52.21).
Dixon opened the NCAA meet for WVU in the 200 individual medley on Thursday, placing 42nd in 1:46.44.
Armstrong, Di Sibio and Dixon were West Virginia's first NCAA Men's Championships qualifiers since Andrew Marsh in 2016. The trio joined sophomore Morgan Bullock and junior Emma Harris from the Mountaineer women's team as NCAA qualifiers this season. Bullock earned honorable mention All-America status with a 15th-place finish in the 200 butterfly on March 17 in Columbus, Ohio.
Following Saturday's action, WVU's 2017-18 season has concluded. The campaign featured five NCAA qualifiers, two honorable mention All-Americans, two Big 12 individual champions, a pair of second-place team finishes at the Big 12 Championship and a combined total of 15 school-record times/scores, among other accomplishments throughout the year.
