Box Score Morgantown, W.Va. –
The West Virginia University women's tennis team started fast to claim the doubles points and won three singles matches to roll past Duquesne, 4-2, at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown on Friday.
"Having two matches on the weekend, it's very important how you start the weekend and how you handle that first day," fifth-year coach
Miha Lisac said. "So for us to be able to get the doubles point today was important, because at the end having the advantage and being able to close out the match was huge. We had pretty solid performances on certain courts and we need to take that into tomorrow."
WVU opened the match by winning the doubles point, as the Mountaineers claimed wins on two of the three doubles points.
Paula Goetz and
Lyn Yuen Choo opened doubles play with a win for WVU, dropping Ally Miller and Maddy Adams, 6-2, on the second court. After trailing early, the freshmen tandem of
Anne-Sophie Courteau and
Giovanna Caputo rallied to defeat Sara Mitrovic and Aishwarya Kona, 6-3, on the third court to clinch the doubles point.
On the first court, Sofía Duran and
Christina Jordan led Kylie Isaacs and Julianne Herman, 6-5, when the match was abandoned due to clinch rules.
The Mountaineers continued their fast start, as Choo won the first singles match of the day at No. 3 over Miller, 6-2 and 6-0, to give WVU the 2-0 lead. Duquesne secured its first point of the day as Jordan fell to Isaacs, 7-5 and 6-2, in at No. 1, to cut the lead to 2-1.
Caputo earned WVU's second win of the day, dropping Adams in two sets, 6-0 and 6-2, at the No. 4 slot. The win gave WVU a 3-1 lead over the Dukes. Duquesne cut the lead to one as Courteau fell in a second-set tiebreaker to drop the match, 6-2 and 7-6 (3).
Goetz clinched the match for the Mountaineers when she topped Kona in two sets, 6-1 and 6-4, on court No. 5 to give WVU the 4-2 win.
The match at No. 6 between
Abigail Rosiello and Mitrovic was in the second set when it was abandoned due to clinch rules.
The Mountaineers will be back in action on Saturday, March 24, to take on Iowa State. The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m. and will take place at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown.
