
Armstrong Grabs All-America Honors in 100 Breast

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Jake Armstrong of the West Virginia University men's swimming and diving team earned honorable mention All-America status in the 100 breaststroke at the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Friday night.

Armstrong tied for 14th place overall, earning a time of 52.69 in the event's consolation final. With the performance, Armstrong, a two-time Big 12 champion in the 100 breaststroke, became WVU's 15th men's All-American in program history.
Redshirt junior Tristen Di Sibio and freshman David Dixon also were in action at the University of Minnesota's Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on Friday.
"Jake had a really nice race, and I'm really happy for him," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "He handled the swims very well today. It's great to see him earn honorable mention All-America honors."
Armstrong qualified 15th (52.44) in preliminaries to start the day en route to claiming a second swim in the finals session. Di Sibio also competed in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 36th place in 53.71. Dixon placed 41st in the 400 individual medley, as he touched the wall in 3:51.04.
"The men had a very strong day," Riggs said. "David had his fastest prelim time and was just off his best. Tristen and Jake had very good 100 breaststrokes, with Jake qualifying for tonight's finals."
Armstrong and Di Sibio each made their NCAA-meet debut on Friday. Dixon competed in the 200 individual medley on Thursday, finishing in 42nd place (1:46.44). The three Mountaineers conclude action at the NCAA Championships on Saturday. Dixon is set to compete in the 200 butterfly, while Armstrong and Di Sibio will swim in the 200 breaststroke.
Dixon owns the school record in the 200 butterfly, earning a season-best time of 1:42.50 at the Big 12 Championship on Feb. 24. The Richmond, Virginia, native qualified 27th for the NCAA meet. Additionally, Di Sibio won the Big 12 title in the 200 breaststroke at the conference meet, marking the first time WVU returned home with multiple individual conference champions since 2014.
Preliminaries, which begin at 11 a.m. ET, will be streamed on GopherSports.com. ESPN3 will provide live video coverage during Saturday's finals session, beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
