Dixon placed 42nd overall, earning a time of 1:46.44 in preliminaries. The Richmond, Virginia, native moved up four spots from his initial seed time entering the event.
"David had a really solid first swim for us," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "It was his fastest prelim swim and just off his best time. David's swim was a great way to start our week."
Dixon continues his NCAA Championships on Friday in the 400 individual medley. Additionally, junior Jake Armstrong and redshirt junior Tristen Di Sibio begin their meet with the 100 breaststroke. Armstrong, a two-time Big 12 champion and school-record holder in the event (52.11), enters the national meet ranked No. 9 nationally. Di Sibio sits in the No. 28 position.
Friday's preliminaries are scheduled for 11 a.m. ET, at the University of Minnesota's Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center, with the finals set for 7 p.m. ET.
On Saturday, Dixon will compete in the 200 butterfly, where he owns the WVU school record (1:42.50) and enters the event ranked No. 27 nationally. Armstrong and Di Sibio will swim in the 200 breaststroke. Di Sibio won the event at the Big 12 Championship on Feb. 24.
