
Mountaineers Return to National Rankings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following three straight season-best performances on the road, the West Virginia University gymnastics team is nationally ranked for the first time since Jan. 22, as the Mountaineers sit at No. 25 in this week's Road to Nationals Rankings.
WVU (13-10, 0-3) moved up four spots with a 196.07 regional qualifying score (RQS), 0.205 points better than its previous RQS of 195.865. The Mountaineers' boost follows a season-best 196.775 showing in a sweep of Towson's five-team meet on March 18. WVU's winning score ranks No. 9 in program history.
The Mountaineers continue to rank No. 13 nationally on vault with a 49.145 RQS. The team also moved up to No. 27 on floor (49.18 RQS), No. 28 on balance beam (49.01 RQS) and No. 38 on uneven bars (48.87 RQS).
Junior Kirah Koshinski jumped three spots to No. 9 on vault and boasts a 9.91 RQS. The Berwick, Pennsylvania, native also moved up 12 spots on floor exercise and ranks No. 32 with a 9.9 RQS.
Senior Zaakira Muhammad moved back into the vault rankings and sits at No. 47 with a 9.865 RQS.
This week's rankings are the fourth of the season based on RQS. An RQS is calculated by taking a squad and gymnast's six-best scores, three of which must be from a road meet, dropping the top score and averaging the remaining five.
Regionally, WVU ranks No. 5 in the Southeast. The Mountaineers rank as high as No. 3 on vault and also rank No. 5 on beam, No. 6 on floor and No. 7 on bars.
Koshinski is one of four Mountaineers to own a regional ranking on vault and sits at No. 2. Muhammad ranks No. 10, and senior Robyn Bernard follows at No. 13 (9.85 RQS). Sophomore Julia Merwin ranks No. 21 (9.825 RQS).
Koshinski also ranks No. 5 on floor. Senior Jordan Gillette follows at No. 24 (9.835 RQS).
Muhammad and junior Jaquie Tun rank No. 20 regionally on bars with 9.82 RQS marks. Muhammad also ranks No. 15 in the all-around (38.84 RQS). Additionally, junior Carly Galpin ranks No. 22 on beam (9.82 RQS).
The Mountaineers moved back up to No. 3 in the Big 12 Conference. WVU ranks No. 3 on each apparatus but bars, where the team ranks No. 4.
Koshinski ranks No. 4 on vault and No. 6 on floor. Muhammad ranks No. 8 in the all-around and No. 10 on vault.
Oklahoma remains No. 1 nationally with a 198.12 RQS. LSU ranks No. 2 (197.89 RQS), and UCLA sits at No. 3 (197.84 RQS). Utah (197.54 RQS) and Florida (197.365 RQS) rank No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Alabama ranks No. 6 (197.165 RQS) and is followed by Michigan at No. 7 (197.075 RQS) and Washington at No. 8 (196.915 RQS). Kentucky (196.8 RQS) and California (196.775 RQS) round out the top 10.
The Mountaineers travel to Ames, Iowa, this weekend for the 2018 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship, set for Saturday, March 24, at 5 p.m. EST, inside Iowa State's Hilton Coliseum.
